Daniel 9:20 While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel and making my request to the Lord my God for his holy hill— 21 while I was still in prayer, Gabriel, the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice. 22 He instructed me and said to me, “Daniel, I have now come to give you insight and understanding. 23 As soon as you began to pray, a word went out, which I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed. Therefore, consider the word and understand the vision:
It was about the time of the evening sacrifice. According to one commentary the time of the evening sacrifice was significant.
This was a special time of day, when Moses offered the Passover lamb (Exodus 12:6) and when Jesus was crucified (Matthew 27:45).
This is significant because the evening sacrifice was not allowed in Babylon anymore. As a matter of fact, As a young man in Jerusalem, Daniel often saw the smoke rising from the temple at the time of the evening sacrifice. All that had been taken away from him decades before when he was captured and taken from Jerusalem. The Israelites may have forgotten about the past, but Daniel didn't. He still looked to God.
The commentaries agree, God was waiting for Daniel to start praying for his people and as soon as Daniel started the prayer, Gabriel was dispatched.
One of the commentaries says that Daniel didn't even get to say AMEN before the answer to his prayer was there.
Gabriel told Daniel "you are highly esteemed". When I read the Bible, I imagine the characters using today's language. Apparently one of the commentaries sees thing in a similar light. In the commentary, David Guzik is quoted. David Guzik uses a phrase from the 70's to describe these words.
"I'll show you some 'sevens'
that will really blow your mind."
that will really blow your mind."
