Daniel 9:24 “Seventy ‘sevens’[c] are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish[d] transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.[e]

c.Daniel 9:24 Or ‘weeks’; also in verses 25 and 26
d.Daniel 9:24 Or restrain
e.Daniel 9:24 Or the most holy One

People are just wicked. There's no doubting that. No matter how many sevens, no matter what the sevens are, as long as there is temptation.... humans will never be capable of putting an end to sin.

When I first read this verse, I was reminded of Matthew 18. We teach it in Sunday School.

Matthew 18:21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.[g]

g.Matthew 18:22 Or seventy times seven

The plain English commentary puts it this way.

However, Gabriel told Daniel that God had other plans. His plans were for a period of 70 times 7 years. At the end of that time, some important things would happen.

· God would stop evil and bad things.

· God would forgive people although they have done wrong things.

· God would start a good time that would last for always.

· God had told his prophets what would happen in the future. These things would happen as God had promised.

· God would make a very holy place. We do not understand what this sentence means. It might mean that a very holy person would come.

These things were answers to Daniel’s prayers. Daniel was praying for his people. They had done wrong things and God had punished them

To me... knowing the human mind.... It's almost as if Gabriel is telling Daniel that it doesn't matter how long God gives Israel to get its act together, they will never do it, being human and all. So God has put a time limit on it and when that time comes.... God will set things straight.

I know a lot of you will want to study the numbers aspect. I mean it's only human to be curious. The Precept Austin commentary has it broken down pretty well in commentary.... IMHO. This commentary gives the breakdown of days vs years etc. It also mentions the difference in the lunar calendar and the solar calendar, and such.

There's a quote from that commentary that I thought fit.

If the plain sense makes good sense,
don't try to make some other sense
or it may result in no sense (nonsense).

I use to get really hung up on when the Seventy Sevens would come to an end. Now... it'll be here when it gets here. God is in control and I have to be ready when it comes.
