Daniel 9:“Therefore the curses and sworn judgments written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against you. 12 You have fulfilled the words spoken against us and against our rulers by bringing on us great disaster. Under the whole heaven nothing has ever been done like what has been done to Jerusalem. 13 Just as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not sought the favor of the Lord our God by turning from our sins and giving attention to your truth. 14 The Lord did not hesitate to bring the disaster on us, for the Lord our God is righteous in everything he does; yet we have not obeyed him.
Daniel and the people of Israel were in a unique situation. Their very history was rich with signs of God's actions. He led them out of Egypt. He made a covenants with them. He sent prophets to remind them what would happen if they didn't hold up their part of the covenant. When the prophets warned them, all they had to do was turn around and go back to Him.... but they failed.
The commentaries have been linking to Deuteronomy 29 a lot during the verses in this chapter of Daniel. Chapters 29 & 30 are the third speech Moses made in front of the people of Israel after they left Egypt.
Deuteronomy 29:19 When such a person hears the words of this oath and they invoke a blessing on themselves, thinking, “I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way,” they will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry. 20 The Lord will never be willing to forgive them; his wrath and zeal will burn against them. All the curses written in this book will fall on them, and the Lord will blot out their names from under heaven. 21 The Lord will single them out from all the tribes of Israel for disaster, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law.
Daniel was afraid that things had gotten so bad that God was going to blot out their names.
