Day in DC

Does anyone have any suggestions for a trip to DC with my middle school aged sons? We've seen the monuments and the "big" museums (air and space, natural history, spy).

We're going friday do you recommend the Library of Congress or the Mint for kids that age?

Any other suggestions?

I'm not sure if they still do but the FBI used to have tours. Would they be interested in the White House..Capitol?

Ooh, we haven't been to either of those. Let us know how they are if you go!

What about the Botanical Garden? Actually, it's probably more fun at Christmas, since they have the trains there.

What about the Capitol? They have the new visitors' center, now. I'm thinking of taking mine there, but it will have to wait until Sept, since they're going to be gone for a couple of weeks to visit their dad.

Those are all great ideas! I'll check out whether we need tickets in advance.

We wanted to go to the WH before the new guy got in, but we never made it. And I remember reading about all sorts of requirements. Do you know if they still have those? I think you had to have at least 10 people in a group, had to provide the names & other info on each person in advance, etc.

Have you considered just visiting the zoo? That is always fun to do too.

 Well, since it's not the politics forum, I was trying not to to dominate the thread with politics. But, also - Thing1 and especially Thing2 were big Bushies. While they have moved on & gotten used to the new admininstration - they still have a tendency to be very vocal and make editorial comments without thinking where they are. :yikes: I don't know if I want to take them now, can you just imagine? :lmao:

Been to the Zoo. I agree with whomever was saying in another thread that it's kind of lame and expensive. Overall, it was ok.

Actually, to cut down on expenses at some of the places we go, we bring our lunch. It's easy enough to pack sandwiches, fruit, chips & cookies into a small cooler and just go. Museums are free, but the vendors on the street aren't cheap. And restaurants aren't, either. It's just easier to take the cooler.

My oldest son got so politically outspoken during the election I got a phone call from school. Apparently, she didn't appreciate my son calling her a sheep (among other things - he didn't cuss and I personally think she was being a cry baby). Anyway, I handle her just fine and never heard a word from her after our conversation and he even went up a letter grade, imagine that! I couldn't believe she would call and complain to me after she ADMITTED he was one of the top students for participation.

And I am famous for cooler packing.... totally saves money and the food is better and I know it was prepared in a clean environment. :yay:

Hvp caught my joke in there as the zoo being far more civilized.

:roflmao: at calling her a sheep! :high5: to your son! My middle school son had one teacher who was not his SS teacher, who seemed to love to work politics into their discussions the both years my son had him. He also had him for homeroom.) I've had quite a few discussions with him about his interaction with that teacher about being polite, respectful while still voicing opinions, etc. He holds his own pretty well, I think, & doesn't back down from the discussion in order to placate the teacher either.

Based on y'all's input I planned a big day of going to the FBI and then the Capital. But now after two days of working late so I could get the day off, we're all too tired to go. Hopefully we'll change our minds tomorrow.

The forums are a great place to get great ideas. THANKS!
