My husband is in the Navy and we will be relocating to California, MD from Pensacola, Fl at the end of this month. We have a 6 month old and a 2.5 year old I would like to enroll in daycare up there (they are both in one now and love it). I am looking for recommedations and contact information for daycare centers in California, MD. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Prep & Play

They are booked. I just got a call from them. My son has been on their list for 6 months. They finally have an opening. He'll be 4 on Sunday.

Good luck, infant openings are tough to find around here. Plus, you have a toddler on top of that.

I'm moving to the area in about 6 months. I'm a daycare provider here in va beach and have been constantly full now for the past 2 1/2 years. I was wondering the need there for home providers. Is this the norm? Are daycares quick to fill? Would love to talk with a home provider and get an idea on locations, reasonable rates and such for the area.

There is a huge need. Infant spots are full all across the county. No sure what the regulations are in VA, but you are only allowed 2 infants here.

My kids go to prep n play and I love it. Most of the time they are booked, and they take 2 years and older, but I highly recommend it. I would atleaset call and see if you can get your 2 1/2 year old in now or atleast get on the waiting list. They did just move the kids around and I know they had a few openings. 301-373-3710.

I was paying $165 a week for my infant for home daycare and that was earlier this year. Not sure if the price has gone up or not since then.

You were getting a good deal. Depending on where you live in the county, the average is $200 per week.

only allowed 2 infants...isn't the number based on size of space, etc?

No. It is 2 infants per provider. If they have a helper they can have more. Most inhome daycares do not have a helper though. And I totally agree with the 2 infant per person rule. It is hard to give infants the attention that they require with another infant around plus 5 other tots.

Virginia doesn't govern family child care at all unless there are more than 5 children, besides the providers own. After that, I'm not sure what the rule is.

No. The number based on the fact that a provider by herself only has 2 arms to carry the babies out of the house if there is a fire. Originally, the child care licensing rule was 2 under 18 months, but the fire code overrode that and licensing changed their rules to match. Every now and then there is a movement to change the rule back to 2 under 18 mo, but it gets voted down over and over again.

The overall capacity of a child care home is 8 total children although some jurisdictions such as Charles County have zoning laws in place limiting that to 6. A provider's own children under age 6 count towards that number, although with the change to all day kindergarten, they may consider changing that to under age 5. Again, this has nothing to do with space, but with personnel. One person can only do so much. If a provider has an assistant or co-provider (husband & wife teams aren't unheard of) then they can have 4 infants. There is also something called a "small group center" which can also be run from home. The limit on that is 12 children, but I think they can't have infants at all and still require an assistant.

Yeah, out here (va beach) we can have 5 or less children in care and not be registered with the city. If I am reading it correctly, all providers need to be registered there to care for children even if you only care to watch 3 or 4 at a time?

even one unrelated child in care requires a license.
