I get where she's coming from but this just shows she doesn't really understand the concept of social media and free speech. I agree that people should be held accountable for their public behavior, HOWEVER there's the threat of real life retaliation if someone has an unpopular opinion. And sometimes that's appropriate, like if some teacher is spewing pro-Hamas propaganda they should absolutely be fired, but it opens up a dangerous can of worms.

I'm more a fan of the peer review. On here we lambaste the dummy; on TwitterX they have Community Notes. I like that method of rebuttal, not firebombing someone's house.

I think people that cover their faces at protests are just looking to make trouble, but it is the protestors' right. It's the same as posting anonymously.

I got into posting on the Internet - well sort of - via Compuserve. Then Prodigy. Then, via Usenet and Delphi.

I never - used my real name. Because I read EARLY ON that once you write something SOMEONE doesn't like, any time afterward, someone can look you up and do something - bad. Back in the 90's, I read about a guy who had his windows shot up - because he offended some guy five states away who drove across country - just to attack him.

There's also a kind of benefit from it - I remember years ago, someone found out that their favorite Delphi writer - and their favorite Usenet writer - under different names - were both ME. That boosted my ego for about a month.

I suppose that is a little bit different from Doxing , but it could produce the same results.
It's one thing when locals know your feelings, but it's another when your feelings are expressed to the nation wide public, that is filled with crazies.

Sounds like a selling point for bringing back karma.

Used Dejanews, too and dial up BBS's.

See, and I was naive because this is the first social media I'd ever engaged in. It never occurred to me that someone might be *violently* opposed to something they read on the internet. Certainly I never thought they'd care enough to actually look up the person and stalk them in real life. I would never do that and I don't know anyone who would.

Boy was I in for a rude awakening.

In the past 15 or so years Social Media is the cause of a majority of ' gang ' shootings after turf wars for drug dealing ... someone dis'd someone else on Social Media
