Defective mail order items

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this. If you mail order(or internet/telephone) and the item is defective is the company legally required to pay for the return shipping costs?

If the original packaging is in very good condition, you may be able to simply bring it to the post office and ask them to return it to the sender. I've done that a couple times without incurring cost.

So I guess it would be a good thing to avoid companies that do not pay for return postage. Most reputable companies however fo pay for return postage. I think I may start e-mailing people/companies know that I did not buy from them because of their policy concerning return postage.
