DEI --Stossel hits another home run dealing with this problem

It should not be an argument about diversity, it should be an argument of competence.
If a black person is as competent as a white he should not be turned down for a job because he is black.

By the same reasoning the company doing the hiring should not be forced to hire black just to fill their quota.

Human nature cannot be shoved into boxes (unless maybe in China)....Thus when the CEO needs to check a box and qualify for an ESG designation...they hire a consultant,...create some zoom meetings...and employees barely hold themselves together & eye-roll when they hear the new office policies.
Inside...they say: Screw You! (as they should)
Reality cannot be denied. Incompetent people get promoted for all the wrong reasons...and we know it.

The supposition for all of this is that when all candidates are equally qualified, minorities are still discriminated against. I have no problem with hiring an equally qualified person regardless of race or ethnicity or gender or religion.

It's BS through and through that they get denied. No business is going to hire or fire based on color.

We've had good and bad candidates come through our recruiting and never had color come into it.

Behavior has come into it, security clearance blips, work ethic.... Not color. Fired white guys for missing too many Mondays, late, cutting out early without notice... fired others of color for the same or similar things.

No quarter given for color.

The bottom line was always, "Who can help get the work done?" Thats the one that gets the job.

I do have a friend who told me once that he doesn't hire anyone black, because if they turn out to be incompetent it is too hard and expensive to get rid of them, and even after firing them he is still paying them through unemployment

I’ve seen lots of data that confirms that when things are EQUAL - a person hiring is much more likely to choose someone just like themselves.

And THAT is the one instance where I do support diversity. Because at THAT point, a person has done everything they could possibly do. At that point it’s a shame that they don’t get hired - because someone chooses another.

My wife had a similar issue with someone in her office. A black medical assistant who kept missing time and then being caught numerous times sleeping on the job. She fought with HR for months to get rid of her until they gave in. The kicker was another employee filming her sleeping on the job. She actually got in trouble with HR for filming her without permission. The one filming is also black.

Finally got her fired and then she gets a call from HR saying the former employee filed for unemployment. So my wife & the HR manager has to do a zoom with the person from unemployment. My wife didn't hear about the outcome. She just figured she got unemployment anyway. HR didn't tell her.

That's long been my theory as to why so many places of employment require a college degree to get considered (I almost said "hired") - the people doing the hiring have college degrees. So even if the job itself doesn't necessitate having a college degree, the employer requires it.

It satisfies at least two things to help screen, when you have an abundance of applicants - winnows down the pool and demonstrates at least a modest amount of education. Sadly, some jobs in government - without the degree, you don't get in. Period. Which is strange, because a lot of the education I received in college would have availed me nothing to actually DO my current job.

But like I said, I've seen data that supports that in places where existing employees are mostly white, or mostly YOUNG, or mostly male or mostly etc., even when all factors make things equal, the scale still tilts towards being LIKE the group. And it isn't blatant - that is, there are often inclusions - because the discrimination likely isn't intentional. It's just something people do - you pick a person you're comfortable with.

Hyper focusing on race tends to make these kinds of things WORSE - because NOW people are concerned about saying the wrong thing, doing the wrong thing and so forth - so this tendency is even MORE likely.
