Salazar’s mother and brother have pointed out that she was not a Colombian immigrant raised by a single mom who didn’t have a college degree as she initially claimed. She was actually born in Miami to a middle class family. Her brother also disputed her claims that she was of Jewish origin.

The Tablet found that Salazar went from being a conservative, pro-life and pro-Israel Christian to a progressive Jewish Democrat during her time at Columbia. She also did not graduate from Columbia as she had claimed on a survey, causing Citizen's Union to pull their endorsement of her.

It makes sense if you understand why it was implemented.

The simplest explanation is - we are a republic, and each state renders their choice for President - as a state.
We are not a democracy. Even Ben Franklin observed this, when he was asked "what do we have?".
"A republic, if you can keep it". We pledge allegiance to the republic, for which the flag stands.

If you don't "get" the idea of states functioning as separate entities, you're not going to get it at all.
We are the United "States", and that's the way we govern. Conceptually, we're a united group of
"states" which otherwise function separately, except when matters of the whole are concerned.
As much as people mention "democracy", our government isn't one. Democracies strictly speaking
easily devolve into mob rule.

The Electoral College is each state casting its vote for President.

PRACTICALLY, the function is to ensure an elected President has broad appeal. Certainly in the earliest
days of the republic, it was entirely possible for one or two states to ALWAYS select the President due
to population differences - and the lack of widely known candidates. Think of it this way - if every state
always JUST chose its most popular politician, only the most populous states would ever elect a President
due to "popular vote". But a leader who appeals to voters across the country - that won't happen.
We've had elections where third parties took a state or two - but that's it.

LASTLY - we all know the rules and the way the Electoral College works. Candidates campaign knowing
how it does. It's how we emerge having "battleground states" - and why candidates of either party spend
little to no time in states they're certain to win. If we had a direct "popular" vote - they would concentrate
in the urban areas - AND campaign on issues mostly of concern to urban voters. We ALREADY experience
some of that in our own state of Maryland, and people don't like it, even in Southern Maryland - voters
in and around DC and Baltimore vote for statewide candidates who don't have to give a damn about us
down here - it's why they might get a new highway in Montgomery County or a new bridge in Baltimore
or a light transit elsewhere - and we get nothing. Because the urban voters' voices drown us out.
