Denmark bans kosher and halal slaughter as minister says ‘animal rights come before religion’

Commenting on the change, Israel’s deputy minister of religious services Rabbi Eli Ben Dahan told the Jewish Daily Forward: “European anti-Semitism is showing its true colours across Europe, and is even intensifying in the government institutions.”

Al Jazeera quoted the monitoring group Danish Halal, which launched a petition against the ban, as saying it was “a clear interference in religious freedom limiting the rights of Muslims and Jews to practice their religion in Denmark”.

The ban has divided opinions in the country, particularly after it recently made headlines for animal welfare policy after Copenhagen Zoo slaughtered the “surplus” young male giraffe Marius.

On Twitter, David Krikler (@davekriks) wrote: “In Denmark butchering a healthy giraffe in front of kids is cool but a kosher/halal chicken is illegal.”

The secular leaders, or the Jews and Muslims? And really, how often do you get to piss off the Jews and the Muslims with the same law? :killingme And whats more, nobody is talking about why Muslins and Jews had very similar food prep rules.

What's there to talk about? They come from the same line that had the same rules for food - Abraham and his little dalliance with Hagar producing Ismael (Islam), and then with the woman God wanted him to be patient with, Sarah, and their offspring, Issac (to procreate through David to Jesus Christ).

Nothing but turmoil since. What's new?

The fact that these rules are public health and hygiene rules dressed in religion to make sure they get followed.

To make sure what gets followed? Nothing in the article points to any kind of public health or hygiene rules. Simply PC animal welfare trumps religious rights on slaughtering animals for religious cooking requirements.

Is that your point? That the state controls religion and how those beliefs are acted out?

Not at all, you wanna swing the critter your head while signing hosanna, fine with me and should be fine with the state, IMO. My point was these rules for food prep were borne of what worked to keep families and communities healthy is the Middle Eastern environment, that's why they are common between the Jews and Muslims. They are religious rules because when dealing with getting societies to comply with rules, "God said so" is a trump card.
