Does anyone know of any programs/clinics/support groups for bi-polar/depression. My son is 18, has quit school, has no friends, does not do well in big groups. We are trying to find some sort of program to help him. DORS has him on a waiting list and Pathways won't take him because he has insurance. Any ideas?????

Your son can find support groups through NAMI Southern Maryland support groups. Check out their site: NAMI Southern Maryland | Home go to NAMI Connection and Peer to Peer. You can call the their office at: 301-737-1988. I do volunteer work with NAMI and they have some excellent programs for consumers and families.

There is also a group called "On our Own" in each County. The NAMI website should have the contact information for it under services.

From one mother to another, I wish you and your son good luck!

Not knowing the specifics of your son's situation, I'd say the first and most important thing is to love him through this period of difficulty and be as patient as possible. I am sure that you do love him but does he really know?

Find things to praise him for and give him credit for things he accomplishes.
Be as encouraging letting him know that you are there for him. If he wants to talk, take time to listen. If he doesn't want to talk allow him some space.

You may be doing these things already, but, as a school counselor once told me: Kids these days need to hear their parents tell them they are loved and they must have the assurance that the parents are proud of them and will always be there for them.

I'll keep you and your son in prayers for his situation and that some program will open up soon where he will feel comfortable in attending.
