Designer babies?

Now why would anyone want to do this. That is just something you REALLY should not mess with!?!?!

Canadian Melissa Vatkin has joined thousands of couples flocking to the United States to cash in on the disputed luxury of being able to dictate the sex of their next baby.
Parents from around the world are forking out around 19,000 dollars for a groundbreaking gender selection treatment offered by only a handful of US clinics but banned in most countries.

I agree. You get what is meant to be.
The thought of paying someone money to mess with nature to give me a Boy or Girl, just makes me sick.

I want to have a little girl, but I will try for her untill I have my own football team. Wont be any paying for it. Thats just stupid!!!!!

ugh. horrible.

won't be long before people pick out their babies future hair color, eye color, shoe size, dress size, disposition, political decisions, what job they'll have, who they'll most likely marry, how many kids they'll have, whether they will write and call their parents daily, how much money they'll make...

Someone help me understand why it's so terrible to code characteristics into your child's DNA? I think it's pretty cool and the technology might end diabetes and other genetic diseases.

But back to choosing gender: I don't see what's so wrong about that, either. We don't have a culture that favors one sex over another, so I don't see an issue like they're having in China. My only problem with it might be the destruction of the other embryos but it seems like they catch them right after conception, so I may or may not be concerned about that. If they were whacking 3-month embryos, that would be a different story.

It seems fairly similar to in vitro fertilization, just with an extra step added in. I don't see anything wrong with it. Sure, it could be considered "Playing God", but the whole fertility industry is playing God, so where do you draw the line?

It does sound cool, but they are going in there and messing with genes. What happens if it doesnt take all the way or something. Then there are people who have a hermaphrodite child, that would have been normal had they left it alone?

Maybe I don't understand correctly. I assume that they look at the cells and determine if the sperm cell carried an X or Y chromosome. They aren't changing the genetic makeup of anything, they're just determining the sex, and either implanting the cells in the uterus, or not.

And see, that's the thing - people who accuse scientists of "playing God" will more than likely have some sort of medical intervention in their lifetime. Even insulin for diabetics is "playing God" - keeping the physically flawed alive when nature would have killed them.

(Now diabetics will blast me for saying they're "physically flawed" )

I do understand if someone is getting in vitro and they say "give me the Girl"

I dont think people that have no problem having children should go and have In vitro if they dont need it just to get the sex they want!

If you have no trouble at all having a child, why would you want to go and have all that mess done?

There are people that go years trying to have a child (husbands aunt and uncle tried for 14 years before they got it) and go through all these different ways to have kids, years of pain and tears.
Now we have people that wanna go through this just so they can have a girl if they want.

Seems to me like some of these people are taking what they have and what their bodies can do for granted. They should be happy that they can even have kids, and take what God/Nature gives them!!

On the same line of thinking, they too should be happy with what they end up with.

As long as they're paying for it, and you aren't, I really don't see the problem here.

If a couple wants to plop down 19k for an elective procedure that gives them a chance at a specific gender pregnancy... I'm confused as to how this should be our concern...

True, I'm not paying for it, so its none of my business if these people take it for granted.

JMO: I see it as rude, and immoral just because of the people that use these procedures just so they can bring a baby into the world, But now we have healthy women coming in becaues they dont want a boy then want a girl!

If I were in a clinic trying another procedure after trying for months or years to have a baby, and a woman was sitting next to me, and I ask her "So how long have you been trying for a baby?" If she were to say " Oh not long i'm here to choose the sex" I would be a little mad!

Would you be mad if your nose was broken, and while in the plastic surgeon's office, you ran into someone whose nose was, in your opinion, perfectly fine, but she too was getting a nose job?

Why? Now, if she said, "Oh, I'm just here to have an abortion. I keep getting knocked up in the back seat of my boyfriend's car. Fertile Myrtle! Ha ha!" I can see how THAT might piss you off a bit.

While that is VERY funny to think about, Its not really the same thing.

Having your boobs, nose, azz done are all things that you do to yourself.

This Gender Picking is something that your doing to your future baby.

**While sitting in this office I would tell the woman getting the nose job, that it looked great to me, and ask her why she is messing with it.***

**While sitting in a office with the woman picking the sex of her baby, I would ask her why she just cant leave well enough alone, and let nature do its thing!!

There is a HUGE difference between 2 women at the Plastic surgeon's office and 2 at the in vitro office.
