Deuteronomy 14:1 You are the children of the Lord your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave the front of your heads for the dead, 2 for you are a people holy to the Lord your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the Lord has chosen you to be his treasured possession.
This is from Enduring Word.
The cutting of the body and the shaving of the head were common mourning rites in the ancient Near East and are referred to in many places in the Old Testament (Isaiah 3:24; 15:2; 22:12; Jeremiah 16:6; 41:5; Ezekiel 7:18; Amos 8:10; Micah 1:16).”
The mutilation of the body persists still in some countries, e.g. in New Guinea, where a mourner, especially a woman, removes a joint of a finger, and in extreme cases, more than one finger joint.”

I got this from bibletrack.org.
This is a restatement of Leviticus 19:27-28 concerning cutting oneself. Incidentally, Jezebel's prophets of Baal practiced this strange procedure when they were trying to call fire down to ignite the altar as they competed with Elijah in I Kings 18:28. It was a heathen practice that accompanied their mourning. GOD SAID NO! But hundreds of years later, they seem to be engaging in this heathen practice from the references we see in Jeremiah 16:6; Jeremiah 41:5 ; Jeremiah 47:5. It was first mentioned as part of the law in Leviticus 19:28.
It's hard to point out some of these things. A couple of the people I love dearly have dealt with cutting. A couple have tats as well. I've never understood the temptation myself. I know for a fact, however, that they didn't do it in preparation for a worship service, pagan or otherwise.
