About 2 months ago, my little 6 year old kitty started vomiting and having diahrea (sp?). I took her to see Dr. Pressman at the White Plains Animal Clinic on a good friends referral. (I had recently decided my previous vet would no longer be seeing my animals) She had gone from 15lbs to 10 lbs by the time he was able to see her.
He looked in her mouth, checked her tummy for any blockages (from the outside), took blood for blood work, gave her a steriod shot and sent us on our way. He called me the next day and said her blood work was excellent and there was nothing wrong with her that the blood was showing. So he then said she had Irratable Bowel Syndrome. Ok fair enough. He prescribed a medication and a new diet, prescription diet i/d canned food.
For the time she was on the medication she seemed better, but did not gain any weight and was still not eating as she should. So I took her back. She lost another 2lbs, now weighing in at 8.1lbs. He gave her another steriod shot, a shot of B12, a new medication and ordered her to stay on this food and possibly be quarentined. That night, she ate like a horse and I was very happy. Giving her meds was not easy and they were gel capsules that would break open if not swallowed immediately.
2 weeks later, she still had not gained weight, but seemed to have a bit of an apetite. So I called the vets office and they said to let her have hard food as well, ended up having to put her on prescription diet i/d hard food, but she has now lost more weight, has little to no energy and is refusing to eat.
My heart is breaking. She wants her regular hard food, but I am scared to give it to her. Last night she vomited for the first time in over a month. Her poo has not returned to normal. I get little quarter sized hershey kiss poops. She is drinking water and urinating so I know she isnt dehydrated.
I have made an appt with Dr. Cunningham in La Plata for Tuesday am, actually it is with one of the vets at his office.
My heart says this is not IBS, but I am in no way a vet. I have considered the fact that maybe she has a bad tooth and that could be why she was spilling alot of her food, but Dr Pressman said her teeth are fine. I have asked if she has a blockage, even a small one, and Dr Pressman skipped right over taking X-rays to suggesting surgery, which in her state can and more likely will kill her. I also asked about it being a food allergy, because I had switched hard food right before she got sick, and he said normally food allergies cause a loss in fur...
Does anyone else have any ideas? I hate seeing her like this. I rescued her when she was 5-6 weeks old. She is like my baby. I told my husband last night that I may have to make a decision on Tuesday I dont think I can make, but if it is the best thing for her, then that is what I have to do.
Any thoughts and help would be appreciated. I am sorry this is so long. I probably put this in the wrong thread as well. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Take Care.
