Diagnosed with IBS????

About 2 months ago, my little 6 year old kitty started vomiting and having diahrea (sp?). I took her to see Dr. Pressman at the White Plains Animal Clinic on a good friends referral. (I had recently decided my previous vet would no longer be seeing my animals) She had gone from 15lbs to 10 lbs by the time he was able to see her.

He looked in her mouth, checked her tummy for any blockages (from the outside), took blood for blood work, gave her a steriod shot and sent us on our way. He called me the next day and said her blood work was excellent and there was nothing wrong with her that the blood was showing. So he then said she had Irratable Bowel Syndrome. Ok fair enough. He prescribed a medication and a new diet, prescription diet i/d canned food.

For the time she was on the medication she seemed better, but did not gain any weight and was still not eating as she should. So I took her back. She lost another 2lbs, now weighing in at 8.1lbs. He gave her another steriod shot, a shot of B12, a new medication and ordered her to stay on this food and possibly be quarentined. That night, she ate like a horse and I was very happy. Giving her meds was not easy and they were gel capsules that would break open if not swallowed immediately.

2 weeks later, she still had not gained weight, but seemed to have a bit of an apetite. So I called the vets office and they said to let her have hard food as well, ended up having to put her on prescription diet i/d hard food, but she has now lost more weight, has little to no energy and is refusing to eat.

My heart is breaking. She wants her regular hard food, but I am scared to give it to her. Last night she vomited for the first time in over a month. Her poo has not returned to normal. I get little quarter sized hershey kiss poops. She is drinking water and urinating so I know she isnt dehydrated.

I have made an appt with Dr. Cunningham in La Plata for Tuesday am, actually it is with one of the vets at his office.

My heart says this is not IBS, but I am in no way a vet. I have considered the fact that maybe she has a bad tooth and that could be why she was spilling alot of her food, but Dr Pressman said her teeth are fine. I have asked if she has a blockage, even a small one, and Dr Pressman skipped right over taking X-rays to suggesting surgery, which in her state can and more likely will kill her. I also asked about it being a food allergy, because I had switched hard food right before she got sick, and he said normally food allergies cause a loss in fur...

Does anyone else have any ideas? I hate seeing her like this. I rescued her when she was 5-6 weeks old. She is like my baby. I told my husband last night that I may have to make a decision on Tuesday I dont think I can make, but if it is the best thing for her, then that is what I have to do.

Any thoughts and help would be appreciated. I am sorry this is so long. I probably put this in the wrong thread as well. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Take Care.
Erin

Cat with IBS?

What is the status of your cat? Is she doing any better?

My cat has been diagnosed with pancreatitis. He is a 9 yr old neutered male. He has had blood work, various tests starting with general type tests and later more specific tests, x-rays, and maybe a couple of other diagnostic items I don't recall. His symptoms were:

-vomiting: vomiting food, then clear froth, then yellow to green slime, later pinkish froth. He would vomit 5-6 times a day.
-lethargy, pain in his abdomen, wanting to eat but wouldn't.

He had always eaten Science Diet Dry CD.

We were very, very worried and at a loss as to what to do.

Dr. Bowen, Ches An Hosp, in Ches Beach, worked with us and helped us understand what was happening to him and with her help we got him stabilized. He took metoclopromide (anti-emetic to help control nausea/vomiting), sucrulfate (spelling?) to help coat the lining of his stomach which had become irritated from the vomiting, Buprenex as needed for pain, and pepcid as an antacid.

I switched him to cooked white meat chicken. He actually begged for the meat and wouldn't eat anything else. It's like he was telling me that's what he needed. He also gets fresh kitty grass which is just wheat seed grown in an old pot and is very easy to grow. All my cats now gobble this stuff up. And once a week he gets a 1 inch strip of cat lax for furballs.

I've learned alot.

I'd like to hear how your kitty is doing. Better, I hope.

Once he healed up

Hi Erin,

I would take her to an internist. They can be expensive, but you will be spending more time and money going to several different veterinarians that might not be able to diagnose her properly. An internist will do certain tests that your rDVM may or may not do. If you need a recommendation for an internist, let me know.

Sounds like you have a very sick kitty. I wish you the best in finding a cure for her.

Hi everyone! Sorry it took me a little long to get back to you.

Just got back from putting my precious baby kitty to sleep. Turns out she had a large tumor/mass in her abdomen as well as another mass connected to her liver. The vet I saw, Dr Rush, was fantastic!!! She felt the mass immediately and did the xrays. Morgan had dropped to 6.1lbs.

The vet I had taken her to originally either lied on his paperwork or he lied to me. I am not happy. I asked both times if he felt a mass, his answer was no. I asked for xrays and he said she didnt need them because nothing was there, it was just IBS. So why did he put on his paperwork that he felt the mass and that he reccomended xrays???? I am not a happy camper!

I thought she might have had pancreatitis, but the vet said it was rare and that we should do the xrays first to see if there was something else going on.

Long story short, Morgan was diagnosed with Cancer today. I made the decision that I wanted to be with her when she passed away and that I didnt want her dying on an operating table. So, I was there with her when she went to sleep and got to talk to her the entire time. My heart is broken.

Thank you all again. I have attached a picture of my precious kitten when she was healthy. There will never be another kitten like her. She was still asking me for forehead kisses before she went to sleep! :)

Rest In Peace Baby Kitty! We Love You!

Erin,

You certainly did the right thing for her. You were a very good mommy to her. She was so beautiful! I'm so sorry for your loss. All of us animal lovers understand how hard it is to lose them.

I too am sorry that she was so ill. She's lucky she had you. I know how deeply we care for our fur friends and how it hurts when we have to lose them.

First let me say how sorry I am to have read of your poor cat's situation. I just read this thread tonight, so reading the bad news within the first few posts was indeed saddening.

Second, to the above, I would be ready to carve out somebody's liver with a butter knife if I had been the victim of such incompetency. It seems any half-capable vet should have felt one, if not both, tumor, and x-rays probably should have been done given the uncertain cause of her problems.

Anyhow, I hope you are coping well and taking comfort in the fact that you were with her, as that can ease the pain.

Believe me! I am ready to take him to the cleaners, but doing so would not bring my Morgan back to me. I am trying very hard to calm myself so that I can and will have the ability to talk to this vet and tell him face to face how I feel about his stupidity.

The first visit, he said there was no mass. The second visit he said the same thing. I ASKED HIM for xrays just to be sure, he told me that that would be a "waste of time and money" because there was nothing there. He was adament that she had IBS.

So imagine my surprise/anger when he wrote on the medical records that he felt a mass and recommended x-rays!!!! I think the second vet realized by the look on my face that he NEVER said that and actually guided me against xrays!!

I do plan on having a discussion with him. My family wants me to sue him. But what good will that do?? It wont bring my baby back and would cost me more money than that man is worth. The best I can do is guide anyone who loves thier animals to not go to him, ever! Even for routine shots. I just dont think he should even be in practice, but I am sure there are plenty of people who love him and think he is the best vet in the world. I just hope those people never have to go through what my baby kitty and I went through.
