State thinks this is great.......... most thinking people think not........

The company also takes pains to point out that if your car is stolen the plate will say STOLEN or if the car is tagged in an Amber Alert, the plate will give a warning, which is great as long as criminals don’t master the difficult and subtle art known as “removing a license plate.”Maybe they’ll have security screws on it. I bet a crowbar won’t give a crap.

All of this instrumentation raises substantial cybersecurity concerns. Businesses will eventually be able to display advertisements on the plate targeted to specific locations made available through the system’s telematics. If a driver frequently travels to a particular supermarket or bank or gun shop, who has access to the data? How long is it stored? How vulnerable are these systems to data breaches and fraud?

And here we get to the real meat of the matter........

Boston felt that there had to be a better way to essentially charge heavy users of roads more. Reviver—then called Smart Plate Mobile—was founded in 2009, soon after this conversation with his government friend.

"You should be charged based on how you use the roads," Boston said. "Our platform supports the ability to do that... What I'm about is working to solve real problems with technology."

What happens if you are 'out of state' for any length of time ?

Gov have been looking at new ways - ie GPS Trackers - to increase revenue lost as teh dollar is worth loss and average national fuel economy has gone up. Gov should just end CAFE to raise gas tax money.

Dont leave, everything you could ever want is right here :) I mean, it's a win for the state, they make money off the sale, they save money by not having convicts stamp the old plates, they can shut your plate off anytime they want. They make yuuuuuuggggeeeee money data mining the crap out of you.

I agree with their headline: Nobody Wants $700 Electronic License Plates Because That's Stupid

Among other things:

You’d be mounting a $700 electronic device on the most vulnerable parts of your car, often right on your bumper. Want to turn a minor parking lot miscalculation into a $700 bill and the inability to legally drive your car around? Then get a Reviver Plate, dummy!

Further down it is mentioned that if its electronic, it can be hacked.

I have no doubt MD will go with this because there's not a whole lot of stupid ideas they don't want to implement, plus no doubt the owner of the company is a crony and MD legislators are getting their palms greased even as we speak.
