Is there a way to purchase a directv dish and receiver without agreeing to a professional installation? In other words, can't I install this system myself?

You could - but I wouldn't count on getting a signal. It's not as though you can just point it in the general direction and cross your fingers.

But who knows? You might get lucky.

Its not that hard to aim the dish. You just need it firmly mounted to insure it does not move after you aim it. The reciever has a builtin signal meter and aiming directions / cordinates for your zipcode. We have one that we take in the motorhome and just drive a stake in the ground and aim it. Watched the world series at Bristol Motor speedway.

I have all the information as to where to aim it, its just that I want to find a place to purchase the equipment locally. I guess I could find an rv store.

I'm mounting it on a pole. Does radio shack sell Directtv or Dish network. If they will sell me the dish, reciever and cables, then I can take care of the rest.

I think they are dish network. Bjs probally sells it. You will probally need a compass unless you neighbor has a dish then you just point yours like theirs and fine tune with the signal meter.

I installed mine...up the ladder...small adjustment...down the ladder...check the signal strength...repeat. Would have been much easier with a helper, but I normally get ~98-99 strength...I did well on my own.

Radio Shack and Walmart used to carry the DirecTV kit. I've had mine so long, and have since switched to the DVR box ( gotta have my TIVO!) that I don't know if they still carry it.

You can buy the gear in the aforementioned places, but DirectTV will give you 4 recievers, a dish, a DVD recorder, plus install it free. What would you want to do your own for? hmm.
