Dirt crampin'...

OK, cry baby time attention ho' time; I started riding dirt bikes last fall. I'm getting my share of bumps and bruises and dings on my learning curve and this is to be expected. I'm a fairly athletic dude, still play basketball, still run (plod) etc and so forth, point being I'm in decent shape.

Well, I got a cramp one day last winter, that night actually, the adductor longus if I read my Internets correctly, after a long day of riding, in my inner thigh from squeezing the bike with my knees, as I been teached. I'm talking the electric explosion, bolt upright in the middle of the night, helpless won't go away, KAPOW cramp. Point being I hadn't had one of them since 8th grade and first day of wrestling practice. Not weight training, not long runs (anything over 20-30 yards) not old man basketball nights, nothing.

Early this spring, it happens again, only the opposite side.

I know it's potassium deficiency, need more stretching, which I do all the time anyway, damn it, (just not enough ) , and the fact that I have sissy inner thigh muscles, so, I got that. The point of the story was yesterday was another big ride day, lotta jumping (death grip on teh bike with my knees ), and last night...around 3 am...they BOTH went. At the same ####ING time!

Dude, I was soooooooooooo ####ed. I was waddling around like a freaking crab scuttlin' across a hot dock looking for the water, desperately looking for some sort of position to help them relax or stretch. It only got worse and I'm laughing like a mad man at the absurdity of it all and just about in tears in pain, just screwed.

Well, finally, I'm in the 'man at urinal' position (I did decide to go take a piss because...I needed to...and I was begging for that to serve as a distraction)and kind of squatting in various degrees that don't make it worse but kinda better and, finally, it let go. One then the other. Basically, it was that 'it's gonna cramp up until it snaps' feeling and, it just never snapped. It finally stopped. Unreal.

So, dirt bikers, this ever happen to you? Holy hell.

Got better things to do
Happens to me all the time. I was pushing potassium like crazy and it didn't seem to help. Then I found out that there are other reasons. Dehydration is a big one, so are low blood levels of either calcium or magnesium.

But unfortunately, it's a matter of age and the medical establishment hasn't really figured out the reason for "REST CRAMPS"

"Rest cramps: Cramps at rest are very common, especially in older adults, but may be experienced at any age, including childhood. Rest cramps often occur during the night. While not life-threatening, night cramps (commonly known as nocturnal cramps) can be painful, disruptive of sleep, and they can recur frequently (that is, many times a night, and/or many nights each week). The actual cause of night cramps is unknown. Sometimes, such cramps are initiated by making a movement that shortens the muscle. An example is pointing the toe down while lying in bed, which shortens the calf muscle, a common site of cramps." MedicineNet.com

Try massaging your legs before you go to sleep.
I used to get the cramps in my lower legs after roller skating, the massage seemed to help.

I get them all the time, but only after surgery to my L5-S1. Ever since then, I've had weird leg, foot and toe cramps. Nerve damage of some kind.

I found the best thing to do when you get a leg cramp is to stand up and put weight on it as quickly as possible.

That was for Mr. Post-a-tread-cause-i-hurt-myself-and-my-better-half-hasn't-called-me-yet...

Well, missy, I'll have you know that I am not some cry baby that seeks attention every single time I get a boo boo. I did NOT hurt myself, for once. I merely got a cramp.

Well, two cramps. And it hurt. A whole bunch. :drama:
