NEW YORK -- Scuba divers searching for a 14-year-old boy whose little sister said he jumped into the East River on the way to school found the boy's body in the water on Sunday.

The body was found shortly after 2:30 p.m., said police spokeswoman Detective Theresa Farello. Police said the body was that of Sydney Hatchett, who had been missing since Friday.

Sydney's 6-year-old sister told her mother and police that she and her brother were walking to school in lower Manhattan on Friday morning when he announced, "I'm going to jump in the water."

The girl said that despite her protests the boy took off his coat, climbed over a railing and dropped himself into the river. She described seeing the boy briefly surface from the water before disappearing.

She ran home with his coat and alerted her mother, who called police.
