DNA testing for dogs-

I would consider doing this-I adopted 2 stray Shepherds. I have nothing to go on other than they were "repeat offenders"-meaning they had been picked up by animal control 2X's. I was able to contact the dog’s vet-but the office manager refused to give any medical info (does HIPAA apply to dogs??).
Anywho-I believe these Shepherds are Hybrid, and while they are loving and x-tremely intelligent-I just pick up on something a “little different” than my other domestic dogs-and for that matter, all the dogs I've owned in my lifetime.
I would consider this testing in order to give these majestic creatures the best possible care they could have.
:yay:

I sent them a sample from a known chow mix and they came back with German Shepherd and Border Collie!

This "DNA test" is a scam from a company that is desperate to bail themselves out of $40 million in debt. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/15/AR2007041500701.html

Your vet will have a better shot at guessing what breed it is for $65, better yet, throw a dart, it's free.

No harm intended but you posted "Chow mix"-is so hard to believe that mix might contain Shepherd and Collie??
IMHO, I don't believe the DNA test is a scam-like most diversified companies they rob Peter to pay Paul.

You may have missed the point... What was hard to believe is that the part that WAS known, (Chow) was NOT listed.

I don't think "diversified" is a term that applies to a company that does not know on Wednesday whether they make payroll on Friday. This test is way to generate a lot of cash very quickly. Survival mode.

The AKC offers DNA testing to those that suspect that their dog's breeder falsified registration. Although it would be great to just take a sample from the puppy, you have to get the breeder to consent to allowing samples to be taken from the parents. This testing is for paternity reasons.
