Do dogs get the flu?

crabcake

But wait, there's more...
Emmitt (beagle) has been acting strange for a day and a half now. He has a bit of the shakes, feels a little warmer than normal to the touch, and he's yelping out of nowhere (e.g., no one's touching him, but he does it when someone gets close to him, like he's afraid of someone touching something that's hurting him). His legs/joints seem a little sensitive.

I'm wondering if it's possible he might have touch of the flu or a cold bug, if that's possible. We've had some flu-like funk in the house the last week or so, and I still have a bit of it myself, but wasn't sure it it was communicable to dogs. I know cats get a little bit of a cold sometimes, so I wouldn't think it's unheard of for the canines.

If he doesn't improve any over the course of the day, I'm going to take him to our vet tomorrow morning. But if there's something serious anyone is aware of based on these symptoms that might warrant an ER type animal hospital, I'd appreciate you letting me know.

He's current on everything shot-wise, and was tested for heartworm at his last check-up.

TIA.

lyme? erlichia? (both tick borne illnesses)

He's older, isn't it? Could be any number of things. Any other symptoms..vomiting, etc.?

No, those are the only symptoms.

I'd watch him. Bubba had ehrlichia and I was convinced he was dying. Stiff..couldn't hardly move and was in a lot of pain...but no other symptoms.

Ehrlichiosis in Dogs

It could be anything..he could have twisted something and just be sore. He could have kidney stones or something like that...is he peeing okay?

Lily has been acting much the same way, but not necessarily yelping upon approach, just having sporadic yelping outbursts...

She has been getting stiff in the hind quarters and I attribute much of the observeable symptoms due to the aftermath of exercise. I then rub her hips and legs and have recently started her on glucosamine chondroitin (sp?) tabs.

She is vaccinated against Lyme's Disease, for what it is worth  and I'll have to look into the other link Catt posted.

She is also around so many other dogs, though, so I would think she is constantly improving her immunity vice being too susceptible to catching just anything. Plus, Emma is free of symptoms and Lily's symptoms have been ongoing for a bit. In reality, I think my baby simply has bad joints.

It doesn't work that well and Ehrlichia is worse than Lyme. I don't do the Lyme vaccination. But you know my position on vaccines.

I gave him some children's acetaminophen earlier and that has helped. Will get him into the vet tomorrow. :yay:

Now that I have said that...you can give asprin...take her temperature..what is it? There is something going around I have a friend that has lost pups..two different vets can NOT find out what is wrong with them...

Take her temp and let us know what it is..good luck..

It takes a lot more to kill a dog ..it's not as toxic to a dog as it is to a cat. Since Emmitt is a smaller dog, I wouldn't give it to him.

I would not give it to a dog or cat period...Many other things that are much safer.....IMO

Emmitt is 35 lbs. I gave him 1/2 a tsp.

A tsp is given for children 25 lbs and more.

It's toxic to animals..doesn't really matter what you give child. That does won't kill him, but I wouldn't give him any more. One dose can kill a cat.

The only thermometer I have is an oral digital one. I'll be calling the vet in a bit when they open. He seems a little better this morning ... sleeping on his stomach with his hind legs stretched out behind him, which he wouldn't do yesterday. :yay:
