That varies school to school and teacher to teacher. Mine go to parochial through 8th grade so they're used to several hours of homework by the time they hit high school

I think they don't give enough homework anymore, because by the time the kids get to college they're suddenly overwhelmed with the prospect of doing an essay in 3 days or a research paper in 2 weeks.

That being said, they don't even teach how to do research papers right in high school... they're nothing but glorified reports. That was the biggest wake up call for me last year, realizing I had no IDEA how to do a college research paper.

You're a LOON :)
My kids have about 10-30 minutes if they sit down and do it with no complaints.. Their school says the rule of thumb is 10 minutes per grade level.. 1st grade 10 minutes.. 5th grade 50 minutes.

When my 6th grader was in 3rd grade he had a teacher that gave him so much math homework it wasn't even funny. He was given the homework on the weekend and on holiday vacations. He hated it.It was a lot.It wasn't make up work but just homework

...you think kids the last 10 years are graduating in good shape?

No i don't. I dont think tons of home work is the answer. Most teachers dont even go over the home work. I just think that there can be a better way.

...what?

There are only so many hours in a school day.

I mean, I would, for sure, blow up our public school system in a heartbeat if it were up to me. There is no way in hell that what we do now is even close to the best we can do.

If a school is tasked with teaching a kid and has no authority over them, then they are at the whim of the student. That means they are at the whim of the parents. If the parents hold no authority over the kid, then, well, then what?

First thing I'd do is legalize drugs and that would instantly eliminate drug dealing as a career choice which would instantly eliminate the threats and violence that is so destructive to the whole school environment and it would also eliminate the cynicism that is rampant when kids know they can make $1,000's a day now with no school or skills past a willingness to just not care.

No!!!

Me too! I am all for year round schools.

...No, no, NO!!!

The only thing that saves us from being completely mad, as a people, is to ingrain in kids that there are times to NOT be on an artificial schedule.

It's one thing to be a farmer and to be working to the daylight and to the seasons of a crop. It's another to just be 9-5, M-F, year round. :jameo:

So, what's the point of having summers off? I mean, when they graduate college they're going to be thrown into the real world. Why should we want them to think summers are for vacations only?
