Mark 2:23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
25 He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”
27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
First, I had to remind myself of the story of Abiathar in the land of Nod. King Saul was hunting David and his crew at the time. Jonathan, Saul's son, confided in David that Saul wanted him dead. This is all back in 1 Samuel 20-21. David and his men were tired and hungry. They went to the temple for food and shelter. The priest there, Abiathar, told them the only thing he had to eat in the kitchen [paraphrased] was consecrated bread. The men had to be "away from women" to eat it. David told the priest they had been fighting, so of course they had been without women. They took the bread.... even though it was not particularly "lawful" for them to do so.
Now.... on to the verses.
The Pharisees were all yelling at Jesus for not taking the "law" serious. Jesus reminded the Pharisees that even the great King David, they cherished so deeply, put his men before the "law" concerning the consecrated bread. Jesus reminded the Pharisees, the priest found an exception for them, because they were at war, and they couldn't just go home to a good meal. There were no women to bake the bread for them.
What do you think God does on His day off? Do you think He would make a sandwich and turn on the game? Do you think He forbids Himself any luxury that wasn't prepared in advance? Do you think God forbids Himself from opening a bag of chips because it's too much work for a day off?
If I need God on His day off, do you think He would be there for me?
Does God ever work on His day off?
