Luke 23:44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.
47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God. 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.
55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.
Well, now the Mission is at the proof! For those of you who have started a mission in church, whether it be a new Bible Study or a Coffee Clutch, the proof isn't the planning or the studying, it's the opening of the door to let people arrive. What if no one arrives?!? What if no one Believes?!?They hung Him on a Cross just outside of town to warn others not to make the Pharisees, Sadducees, Teachers of the Law, and the elders, sneer. They hung Him on a Cross to let people know if you mess with the church venders, they will call the guard on you. They hung Him on the Cross because He wouldn't perform for Herod. They hung Him on a Cross because He was kind to the sick on the Sabbath. They hung Him on the Cross because He knew the sermon better than they did. They hung Him on the Cross because He snubbed His nose at "tradition". They hung Him on the Cross because He was more popular. They hung Him on a Cross because, IMHO, they didn't know or trust the Message they were responsible for teaching.
Now that He has breathed His last breath, His body has been sealed into a hole of solid rock. Well, solid to us humans. Jesus can move mountains if He chooses, He's the Son of God. He was there when the earth was still molten. Jesus could move rock without even wrinkling His nose or claiming "abracadabra".
I've often wondered how they got the spices and perfumes in Him in such a hurry. Dr. Luke says, because it was the eve before the Sabbath, and they wanted to avoid the Cross, they went home to prepare the spices. They would go back after the Sabbath to finish the job. So, aside from holes in His hands and feet from being mounted, and a cut in His side [we'll find it in John's Gospel], and the open wounds from the beatings, Jesus was still whole. He hadn't been embalmed.
I just had a thought. Verse 46 says He breathed His last breath. Does the Son of God need to breath? Even when He's occupying a human body, does the Son of God need to breath? I read when the people were wondering through the desert for forty years, their clothes didn't age. Do you think Jesus had to breath to keep the human body He was cloaked in alive? Anything is possible with God. Right?
I know I serve the Living God! But....
Does He have to breath?
