Dog behavior

This is a post for help, not for criticisms. I'm trying to help a friend. 4 year old boxer/dane mix male. Acting out and being very destructive to her home. Unable to be contained in a crate, eats through METAL crate. Destroying her home, doors, furniture, etc. She has an 18 month old baby and is 4 months prego. Feeling overwhelmed and not sure how to handle dogs behavior. She has had dog since puppy. I've explained it could be the baby and the shift of attention, could be her husband being deployed, could be separation anxiety, etc. She is heartbroken at the thought of getting rid of her dog, but she's not sure what else to do?? Dog is very good with her child, never aggressive. Any ideas??

Wow - she's got her hands full! Is the dog being kept in the crate a lot? A lot more than before the behavior began, or is it being crated more because of the behavior?

Well, just during a normal work day. Not more than normal I would think. Her husband just returned back home last week and so she thought dog would be better but isn't.

Exercise, discipline, and love, and more exercise.

Exercise.

Understandable if the owner has been on her own, pregnant and then with a baby.

But the dog is acting out because it's not worn out. Training is also easier with a fully exercised / played out dog.

Yes, this is what I thought too. I explained to her about the type/breed and she's just exhausted I think. Not that it's fair, but if she cannot commit to the dog it's not fair to him. I have 2 boxers and I also have 2+ acres for them to run on and I cannot imagine just staying inside and going on a leash to walk. Just not the breed.

Not to add to owners list of things to do, but maybe take dog to the vet.

Maybe there's something else going on besides anxiety.

Ask the vet to do the ((going to sound crazy)) dog equivalent test of vertigo. To see if hes "off- balance". If ICit sees this, she might know which test I'm talking about.

I think that whole "off balance " feeling is what made my dog try to eat everything in the house. And he wasn't a chewer- ever.

Best wishes to your friends pup!! Fingers crossed for a simple solution.

I did give her Chris's info.....

I think training is the key as this will work the dogs mind....

dog with tired mind is a less stressed dog..

so how are things on your end :howdy:

I agree with the training and exercise. Boxers have A LOT of energy! I am sure it was hard for her to exercise the dog having a 18 month old and being preggers. Good idea to let it come run at your house Kdenise and have play dates with your dogs :)

Chris is GREAT! And the whole BFF pack! We've learned a lot from them! 1 more class and we graduate!! Woohoo! I do hope that boredom /excess energy is the problem. Those are correctable. Hate to hear about a pup that stressed and can't find the trigger.
