Dog chews

I recently rescued an 8 month old Jack Russell pup. She’s incredibly smart and a very good listener. I believe I got lucky in the behavior department. Gosh I hope that’s not a jinx on my luck.

The challenge thus far has been her need to chew on tasty, smelly things. I haven’t figured out if it’s her puppy need, or her breed trait. Probably both. I pretty much have the boredom handled, but not quite. She demolishes a cow ear in about an hour. Point is, I am asking you guys to share with me the real experiences you’ve had with a hardy chew toy, which has flavor and smelly appeal, but lasts for at least several days. Please help!!! I can’t afford to replace underwear and hiking boots on a regular basis. It doesn’t matter if I hide these things. She’s a sniffer.

Yes, she has several toys which she likes to chew. But she needs stinky chewy satisfaction.

Our dog demolished one of those ears in 30min.
Busy Bone takes an hour.
A friend recently suggested “cow knuckle “ from a butcher. Haven’t tried it yet.
I swear, my dog is part beaver, she demolishes wooden sticks like crazy — we always bring home a stick from a walk, maybe 3/4” in diameter and a foot in length, and the beast chews it up in a day. Goes right through.

Your Jack needs to have the easy track to run itself in a yard multiple times a day.
They tend to be high strung to begin with but even more without the ability to run its energy off.
A tired Jack Russell is a manored Jack Russell.... Great Smart Easily Trainable Dogs.

You make an excellent point, and she gets at least 2-3 hours of quality exercise everyday. She’s very well mannered, but needs the chewing part satisfied.

I have always owned labs and now a Chesapeake, I understand chewing.
We have an old man here in town that has three in various stage's of life.
He walks them most days and they do tricks while on the move.
He will shoot one at a time and they lay dead while he continues walking, or hop over each other while walking. If one talks to him he will bend your ear for an hour.
He owns the empty lot next to his home just for them to run all day.

Don't know where you live but there is a new locally owned business where the PetValu was called EarthWise Pets. Friendly and knowledgeable staff and they carry a large assortment of treats that have been recommended by others like bully sticks and hooves.
My go to place!

I’m in that neck of the woods on the daily, and now I finally have a reason to stop in! Excellent suggestion!

btw, I live in Hollywood but I’m on the road all day everyday in northern SM county.

Alright, @frequentflier, I’ll take the bait! Tell me how you know! I love a good soapbox. 😆
I owned a pet supply business that I founded in 2002 in CA. We closed the doors to my B&M store in Solomons in Dec 2020. For several years, I had a second store in Callaway. When business was good, it was good. Slowly chewy, amazon etc started killing off the business. I couldn't compete with the convenience of online ordering. Chewy sends a dozen roses if your pet dies, they were able to undercut small fries like me because of their buying power etc etc. One of our distributors was selling directly to chewy and we were getting affected by a lot of out of stock items.
My (expensive) lease was up and knowing the rent was going to go up about $1000 a month, I decided it was time to bow out. Now with supply chain issues and the expensive cost of fuel (trucking fees), I am glad I did. Plus I am kind of retired :lmao:
Despite it being a small distance to drive, I am happy to support this new woman owned business and have communicated a lot with her manager, a very smart, competent and friendly young lady. They also carry the food I have my animals on (Farmina) and though I am paying more than buying direct from Farmina, it is worth it to support this start up business.
Off soap box now.

To add they really provide friendly, helpful customer service. My daughter adopted a 9 year old pit and though his is a really good boy, super smart and obedient, he has anxiety in hew situations. She took him there daily for a solid week prior to his scheduled spa/nail appointment in order to familiarize him. It did not matter who was on staff each day, they greeted him, talked and loved up on him and ensured he had safe and open free range to explore and examine the facilities. By the time it was nearing his spa day, he was whining with happy anticipation and wagging his tail as soon as they pulled into the parking lot. Spa day went without a hitch including the nail trimming which can often be stressful to any dog.

IMO, Human interaction and building a customer/staff relationship has great value and will be missed the day all box stores are forced to be gone for good.

That's a novel approach, first I've heard of that familiarization process. Makes sense, if you have the time to do it.

I went by there about a week ago.
I learned they support the local feral cat rescue.
Went in, asked what kibble the rescue uses and bought out what they had on the shelf.
Best $125 I have spent so far this year.

@frequentflier You must be referring to Peppers Pantry and I hope you know that your people miss you! I loved your store, and I am so sorry you had to close up!
I stopped into Earthwise today and found the hoof treats, but no luck on the escape-proof harness. I recently learned my Little Girl is a Houdini if she wants to be. Unfortunately, I am forced to try a big box store for the remedy.
