Dog Clippers

So I have the two wooly beasts and decided it wouldn't be that difficult to give them a nice trim for the summer. :ohwell:

I used the giant's hair clippers and didn't even make a dent in the in the dog's fur coats. Okay, I kinda did on the little dawg, but it took an hour and he was growling at me by the time I gave up. He still looks like an ewok though.

So here's my question, are the "dog" hair clippers different than the human ones? Would that actually make a difference in the ability cut their hair. Or should I bribe a professional to come to my house? The big dawg doesn't fit in my car very well and hates car rides.

Yes they are very different. There are different blades that you would use depending on how short you what their hair to be. You may want to see how much it would be to get him groomed if you don't want to purchase a GOOD pair of clippers. (oster and whal are some of the well made clippers)

Don't go cheap for the big dogs.. their fur is thicker and will stress the clippers too much. Also keep and eye on how hot the blade gets... I have seen dogs get burned from the blade. They make a "Kool Lube" to use.

Good Luck :starcat:

Wanna come to St. Inigoes for snacks and drinks? You could bring your clippers...

I could run the little monster out to you (which I've been thinking about), but the big dawg is a HUGE monster.

I believe you have double-coated dogs. They're double-coated for a reason. You really aren't doing them a favor by shaving them. You should brush them out very well, but their undercoat keeps them cool and protects them from the sun.

They are both soo hot though. Plus big dawg was a rescue of sorts and his fur coat is all matted up and he let's me brush him for a few moments before running away and hiding. I can't get all his knots out. I figured I'd shave them both (little dawg first so big dawg would see he could survive the injustice of it all). All the big dawg learned was that he gets a treat after the buzzy noise stops. :ohwell: And I didn't make a difference to his coat.

Oh and I believe both of them have a minimum of three layers of hair. T went from being a red head to a burnette to a blonde. Lucky dawg.

I have an Alaskan Malamute and heard the same thing about them. I've only seen one Malamute shaved down and he always had the look on his face like, "Good Gawd, I'm naked!" I brush her mostly on the week-ends because it takes so long to do a good job. I wish when they say "blow their coat", it would mean that she could go outside, shake and all the unneeded hair would "blow" off of her and go bye-bye.

YOU think they're hot.

Seriously, a good grooming but, really, don't shave them. Do you have "rake."

Lister small animal clippers will work well but they would be very short. I used them on our sheep. Some huskies etc do quite well clipped down for the summer, it is so hot and humid here it would help keep them from making hot spots. And you could find the ticks. If you need a professional groomer....I'll be happy to provide Paso' number

Yes Cattitude I do, but I am telling you it doesn't make a difference. And yes, I do think they are hot, when they sit there for hours straight panting and go through bowls of water like crazy while they are inside with AC on.

I appreciate your concern, but I would like to shave both the dogs. I'm not making either one "bald", I am making both more comfortable and I am getting the mats and knots out of the big dog's hair so in the future I can brush him better and it won't be so painful for him.

I don't have huskies. I have a Norweigan Elkhound and a "plush" Shiloh Shepherd. From researching both breeds, I know both breeds can be shaved for their comfort.

Not sure if this will work for the elkhound, but for the shepherd we use a Grooming Comb - We have the medium and fine we use on our German Shepherd... once we got the Medium through her coat, I went to the fine tooth and it makes a WORLD of difference. I comb her about every week with the fine comb and it takes about 5 minutes.

If I get lazy and let her go, I have to go back to the Medium comb if I wait more than a couple of months. Mostly in the spring/summer I stay on top of it.

:yeahthat: Just like people think wooly sheep are hot...but it actually helps to insulate them from the heat and sun.

:flowers::cheesy:

you don't see many of them.... Poor thing will look silly shaved but if your SS is matted I think you will be doing the right thing. Having mattes may cause him/her to get hot spots or skin irritation.

I say let a professional do it first..... that way they don't get a "buzz cut". :lmao:

:lmao: Thanks, but none of those would make it through either one of their coats. A plush Shiloh Shepherd may resemble a shepherd, but not really.

I have to use big metal shed n blades on them with rake teeth to get through their hair. I brush little dawg for hours and he still has hair coming out. :lmao:

Check out Pet Edge online, I think you can even compare clippers and prices. I use Andis two speed clippers. Cool Lube is fine to have but it will NOT keep the blades cool for long, you really need several of the same size blades and keep switching them to keep from clipper burning the dog. You know your dogs better then anybody else, if you think this is what they need then listen to yourself.
