good morning all!
I was wondering what type of collars most ppl use? I have always used the nylon with metal buckle type collars. I was at petco last night looking at the nylon with the plastic snap in type. What type do most ppl use and has anyone had any instances where the plastic type has broken or come undone? I will be getting my 8 week old puppy soon and I want him to have the safest collar. people tend to drive a little fast by my house and I am concerned about safety. thanks in advance!!!!

Depends if you're training or just for normal use. I always used the buckle collars and then when the new "snap" type came out I used them.

I had a horrible experience where I almost lost one of my dogs. Two were playing and one dog's collar became caught on the other dog's mouth...the collar twisted and cut off the air supply to the dog. Do some reading on accidents with collars and then make your choice.

My dogs do not wear collars now (just the one that has to have one when she's out because of the electric fence).

I foster and do transports and I have had several of the collars with the plastic clasps break on me. I wouldn't recommend them at all.

We just had this happend the other day with the puppy and her momma. Pup got hung up in mommas collar. Heard the emergency panic yelp and before I got to them the snap collar broke free. We only use them around the house. If it's walk time, they get a buckle collar or harness depending on which dog it is. No snaps outside of the fence.

No shock collars allowed.

Depends on the situation. I have a dog that will jump our fence. I prefer to keep her safe by using the electric fence along with the physical fence. She knows her boundaries now and generally doesn't go near the fence.

It was a decision I had to make for the safety of my dog.

(And she is not left in the yard when we are not home.)

I use a nylon collar with the plastic buckle. Never had a problem with it, but my dog is well behaved and doesn't pull or anything.

Premier makes a martingale collar that's very safe...keeps dogs from pulling out of them. My parents always used them with their greyhounds. Click on the link and scroll halfway down. Those collars come in tons of colors too.

I used a nylon collar with the buckle that releases easily when I got my puppy at 8 weeks. These worked well until she started chewing. We went through 3 of these. Now that she' older, we have to use the type with the buckle. If you crate train, I recommend taking the collar off, especially if you have to leave the puppy and they're alone. I worried my dog would get stuck on something and the collar wouldn't release. My dog still has a lot of energy even at 4 years old and the release kind won't work for her. Well, actually, they work too well! The collar comes off and she knows she's free!
You should see what kind of dog your puppy turns into and decide what works best for you.

I use a halter with fleece padding on the straps that go under my dogs legs. But the halter should be used only when walking them.
