Dog DOES NOT Bark

I'd like to know how it is that I ended up with a dog that does NOT bark? He's an American Bulldog Mix. Is it breed related?

It was suggested to me that MAYBE someone had him de-barked? I just don't think so, as he CAN make a sort of whining/yelping sort-of sound at times (if I walk away from him when he's outside playing). He was only 18 months to 2 years old when I adopted him at the P G County shelter about 6 months ago.

I'm sure a non-barking dog would be a DREAM COME TRUE for some people, but I actually LIKE dogs that bark! This is the first dog I've ever had that doesn't bark and it's weird.

Give me ten minutes with him, and if he's capable of barking I'll get him to bark. :ninja:

It's not unusual for AB's though.

I might be mistaken but I believe dogs that have been "de-barked" still make whining yelping noises. Maybe I'm wrong though.

I'd like to take you up on that offer honestly - if I can TEACH him to bark then I really want that! Does absolutely no good for someone to be at my door and NOT hear a barking dog when I have a dog .....

HMMMM - Well that's what a friend told me too - I really hope he wasn't de-barked because if that's true then he probably came from a fighting background and that would coincide with the scars the vet said were evident of his "rough life" before I adopted him.

My theory is that if he WAS de-barked that he would still TRY to bark? Is that not the case? He doesn't even try to bark that I can tell (well not for knocks on the door).

Or he may have been beaten if he did bark  My rottie didn't bark much at all, he gave a very low growl if he thought something was wrong. When he did bark we knew to pay attention.

I sort-of prefer the bark as a deterrent as opposed to having to FIND my dog outside chasing the perp or some other critter that's outside, as opposed to deterring a perp by barking.

The only time I ever had a break-in was when our police K-9 had died and we had a pup in training ..... thankfully they didn't take the pup but there was no barking to deter the invasion ..... (well that and we think we KNOW what punk, oops son of someone we knew did it who KNEW our GSD had died). That punk got my coin collection too and it wasn't insured! Who knew your limit on "cash" items was a mere few hundred dollars on home owner's insurance?

Yep I know what you are saying, we have 3 dogs now that bark even if someone is walking down the street. It can get a little overboard/annoying though. But if someone broke in with all that racket inside our house, god bless their soul!

Understood as I've had several Rotties and they were each a distinct personality .... one wanted to eat people up, one loved people, the last one was my JRT on steroids LOL - he had MORE energy than the prior 2 Rotts put together - he was a handful to deal with and he barked like no other dog I'd ever had! Made me crazy sometimes but he ALWAYS ALERTED ME to what he saw/heard - can't ask for more than that. He wasn't bothering my neighbors as they were several acres away <G> (and I asked them).

So far the dog food has turned out to be great for many people. I am trying the Lamb & Millet food on my new dog since he seems to have food allergies. We're just not sure what his issue is yet really but we are trying different foods to rule out the most obvious allergy issues.

If you'd like to try the Flint River food I can mail you a sample if you PM me.

Hey, what about your quality dog food?

This boy is sweet as can be with non-aggressive dogs - he defended me with a dog that was being aggressive toward him. So after that I knew to be more careful with him around other dogs. The non aggressive dogs he just loves :buddies: . His over-all demeanor is quite docile until he is challenged .....

You need to reboot the bark circuit..

Take your forefinger and middle finger of one hand and place them in each ear trying to get a good seal..

Place the thumb of your other hand up his butt..

Blow into his nose as hard as you can..

That should re-boot the bark circuit.

If that doesn't work, you may need to hard boot the circuit, but that's kind of disgusting. You have to switch the thumb and the blowing around to push the bark valve on the bark circuit the other way.

Sorry Bob, you can no longer say anything without me hearing it and seeing it as Hyde.
