Dog Fight

I had a 1st tonight-2 of my dogs got into a dogfight-no blood drawn but non-the less, it was pretty scary. A stray had wandered onto the property and got em all riled up…all 5.

1 dog is a Doberman-110 lbs. and the other is Rabbit Dog 40 lbs. (both dogs came to me as strays.)

I picked up a 2-gallon stainless steel bucket filled w/cold water that I keep by the door, and threw it on them.

Yelling and screaming wouldn’t be an option (calm and assertive) or reaching in and grabbing hold of 1 or the other isn’t either.

The younger dog is intact-he just got over heart worm treatments 6 months ago, I’m giving him some time to mend before he gets “cut”-I know that fed into the scenario.

What have you done or would you do differently if your dog was in a fight?

BTW-the water ended the fight immediately!

I went through all 40 threads but didn't find 1 that address's owners dogs fighting

I will tell you what happened when I had a dog fight....

A neighbor (across the street apartment) was getting out of her car and she did not have hold of her mastiff (HUGE DOG). Her mastiff charged towards me and my little boxer. I threw myself between my boxer and the mastiff, I picked my boxer up and would not let that mastiff get near him although the entire time the mastiff was nipping at me and the dog in my arms. What you need to do is assert dominance, wether it be a soft or a light kick.

When that mastiff came towards I caould see hes was about 140lbs..the only thing I could do was yell at him in a very dominant voice and raise my hands and legs. It seemed to work.

I had a 40lb terrier mutt go after a chiuhahua. She had the little girl in her mouth by the back and was shaking the hell out of her. So, after first trying to get the dog to attack me instead of the chiuhahua (I could take it better than the little dog) I took my belt off and looped it around her neck. She let go when she couldn't breathe.

Look my ass glows!
Never put your hands on a dog when there's a fight going on-except to grab both hind legs (you're gonna need another person to help w/this) to use the "wheel barrow" technique. That's the only way I know of bustin up a fight...other than what Lilypad did.
Dogs get fixated and someone, whether they own the critters or not, sticking their hands in the mix is gonna git a person bit!

I can tell you that if a dog ever came after my dog, all hell would break loose. I would have no problem kickin the shiat out of that dog. I can't tell you the number of times my dog has been approached by another dog...most times with the owner right there not caring. People need to keep their dogs on a leash. Yes, they may think their dog wouldn't do anything, but you never know what would happen.

You need to keep a breaking stick on hand...

Someday you'll have to show me that trick about holding your dog while raising your arms and legs. :lmao:

Off topic, I didn't know you had a dobie too! :yay:

We've had our share of dog fights and the bucket of water has broken it up in probably 90% of the fights. The other 10% was one of our male dobies (wasn't quite right in the head sometimes) who wouldn't unfocus when the water was thrown on them. We would usually have to step in and grab collars at that point. But even though Chap wasn't in the right mind he would never bite anyone of us. My mom even got her hand in his mouth at one point, but he never bit down on her. This was all while growing up.

Now if Bandit (our rottie mix) gets into a fight, or even acts a little bit aggressive, we put him down on the ground to show dominance. The doberman that we have now will just flop down and take it - she is pretty much "whatever".

I got a big ol breaking stick handy but in that moment, the water was the closer. Neither dog likes water-so the fight stopped pronto when ice cold water came raining down on their heads! The Rabbit dog is as tenacious as Jack!
