Dog Meets Skunk

As you can likely see from the title, we need a way to de-skunk our miniature dachshund. Rooney went outside last night and started growling. Since Rooney almost never growls, I grabbed a flashlight and went to see. Smelled it first, then saw Rooney writhing in the grass.

Not nearly as bad as it could've been - but our little blind rescue doggie definitely has a certain air about him!

I'm trying to work up the courage to go check the area and see if there is a skunk den under our garage. If so, the remedy I've always heard is to pour moth-balls down the opening.

But Rooney ain't a happy puppy. When he came in last night, our other dog walked up to him, stuck her nose in his face and all but said, What the heck did YOU get into?

My dog, Hardly, has been sprayed twice this year. We tried every home remedy out there. Dawn dish soap together with Nature's Miracle (at Petco) is the only thing that really worked.

Your dog's name is Hardly? That's hardly a name. :lmao:

Hmm-m. Baking soda and peroxide... Isn't that what we mixed together as kids to create those miniature erupting volcanoes?

I like the soda solution. A bath or so in Coke or Sprite sounds a lot more doable.

Hey, Roooonnnieeee!

PS - thanks for those helpful links. Totally appreciated! :elaine: :yay:

If anyone knows, what is the outcome of hitting a skunk with your car? I've never heard anyone talk about it. Does the scent get in your car and if so how long does it take to get rid of the smell. I would think they spray in defense and an oncoming vehicle would warrant a spraying.

Take it through a car wash with the windows down.
Actually, the stink doesn't stay with a car too long after a undercarriage car wash.

There is a Chapter 2 in "The Adventure of Rooney and the Skunk"...

Last night, went for a midnight swim in the pool. Little blind Rooney the Miniature Dachshund came out to stand guard as usual. Immediately he started growling again - a minute later, a potent scent filled the air. Much stronger than the first time!

I gulped. Rooney barked and growled for several minutes. Then total silence. I mean nothing. Just the smell. :faint:

Time to investigate. Rooney was under our screen porch when I climbed out. But it was too dark to see anything so I went indoors for a flashlight. Came out, no Rooney under the porch. Still that deadly silence.

So I went out into the yard, shining the beam everywhere. Found Rooney up against the back fence... eating the head off of a dead skunk.

This little blind dog, scarcely bigger than a fat ferret, had killed that skunk all by himself!

:faint: :jameo:
