Dog sitters

What is the going rate for having a teen or young adult come to your home to watch your dog while you are out of town? Is it the home owner's responsibility to provide food for the person?

We have paid about $50 a day to have a teen/YA stay overnight at our house with our dogs. We always work out the price up front/in advance so there are no surprises. I've found kids don't seem to negotiate, and usually agree to whatever I offer. The $50/night is still considerable savings over either a kennel or a professional service. Since we know them, we usually ask in advance what their favorite snack/breakfast foods are and stock up on some of those. It would depend in the individual situation. Usually the sitter goes to school/work, and eats dinner with their family, so stocking dinners isn't necessary.
I will say that Trail's End is awesome for dog walks/potty break visits. They offer overnight also, we just aren't comfortable enough for that yet.

Personally, I would only trust a licensed and insured professional with a pet first aid certification under their belt to watch my home and animals. Every pet sitter I have used has several sheets of questions regarding the care of the pets and what to do in case of an emergency. I suppose if this young person is someone you know and would trust a key to your home, then go for it.
After a bad situation with a housecleaner many years ago, I am very, very careful who I let access my home and possessions. And not to mention with the care of my animals.

I used to pay BuddyLee $300 a week to come house sit and take care of the cats. He was free to eat whatever was in the fridge/freezer but he mostly subsisted on frozen dinners and take out pizza, from what I recall.

And if you are considering putting the pups in a kennel, let me recommend Chesapeake Pet Resort in Hollywood. They always took great care of Apollo.

Years ago, we used them too for the Malamutes and Huskies and they took excellent care of them and kept all four together in one of the larger cottages with a run.
