Dog Sitting and Vacations

This is the first time Bluejay and I have had to consider what we'd do for vacation - with or without the dogs. So I thought I'd put out a few questions for every and any one.

1. Is there ANY kind of vacation you can think of - or have done - where you brought the little bastages WITH you?

2. Do you know of anyone trustworthy - who can be relied upon for petsitting?

3. Or - tell me what YOU do for your guys when you go out of town? I'd so like to avoid a kennel of any kind.

My parents make me bring the dog with me when I come visit, they can't imagine him being locked in a kennel. :lmao: A month or so ago, I "babysat" Dustin's co-worker's dog when he went out of town. If I needed someone to watch him (the dog, not Dustin ) I'd ask them. If that weren't an option, our vet also kennels dogs, and they'd be the only people in town I'd trust to do so. I've come to know and be comfortable with their staff, and Cody likes them also. :yay:

Several times we've rented a beach house at the Outer Banks in North Carolina and taken our dog with us. She loves to go for long walks on the beach and so do we!!

We always try to bring ours on vacation with us if possible. Now that we are here, we have to fly to WA, ergo no dogs. Drove to OKC, took them with - for 23 hours solid in a truck, they were great pups. We are pretty picky who watches our pups, especially since Bandit needs his daily dose of phenobarb or else he'll have a seizure. But, K has someone at work that has watched them in the past and did an awesome job!! :yay:

We use Interlude Kennel. I have Greyhounds and they are very used to the kennel life. When we pull up to the offices they jump out run to the front door, claw at the door to get in. Once inside they jump up on the counter and try to get to the back where the kennels are. I take that as they like it there.

I usually watch my roommate's dog and she usually returns the favor when I head out of town. Other than that I have pet sit for one of my co-worker's dog once. I'm sure he could watch my puppy if he was available.

We try and take ours with. Camping or to the beach. If we stay in a Motel we make sure ahead of time that they accept animals! I could never leave my guys in a kennel....they've never been in one and I think it would be too confusing and the risk of them contracting some sort of "infection" or "disease" is too high! PLUS, you don't know what goes on in those places behind kennel doors! IF you can't take them for some reason find a family member or neighbor to keep an eye on them!

We live in Hollywood. If we ever did pet-sitting, we'd have to be able to check credentials - it'd have to be someone we could really trust. For the moment we're not too concerned because we might forego the vacation this year for a lot of other reasons. Anyone who pet-sat would have to do more than show up to feed them and put them in at night. If we were gone for a few days, they'd have to play with them, too.

So far, no places we've seen allows dogs, but then again, I'm not sure what we'd do on vacation with dogs along. Most of the time, we see sights, go to restaurants, shop and - go to the beach, and the ones we go to don't allow them.

Still, open to ideas - we might try something completely new this time.

:yay: How long, breed, male, females?

PM Katie for a reference..

If we went anywhere - it'd be for about three or four days. One male, one female. Shepherd mix. They are about eight months old, so they're still puppies albeit very large ones.

Used to take my dog (when I had one) everywhere with us, hotels, ferries, car etc. Took her all the way to Prince Edward Island. It just takes some research to find the places that allow dogs and usually an extra fee.

We share pet-sitting sevices with our neighbors in the past. Recently, we have started motocross (son is racing), we have been to PA, DE, as well as MD tracks so far and in each town have found at least one motel that will take pets, usually not your nicer ones, but we're "dirty" from the track, etc. anyway, so not too picky (the rooms have been clean, just old  ). We have a large crate for our dog, if we try to just leave her in the room, she gets nervous, she'll scratch at the door, etc., but if we have her in the crate, she lies down, and is quiet (as far as we know!) while we are gone (usually just an hour or so for dinner though). There are rather big crates, and if you have 2 dogs to keep each other company, they may be ok for a while when you are enjoying your activities.

1. My DH used to bring his dogs with him everywhere. After we got married and had kids it was harder to bring the dogs because we were taking "real" vacations. For example, we couldn't go to an amusement park all day with the kids because we couldn't keep the dogs in a hotel room for more than a few hours. After that, we would bring the dogs with us when we went camping or drove to visit and stay at relatives. But one of our new dogs gets car sick so we haven't even done that anymore.

2. We've used good neighbors for petsitting. When we didn't have good neighbors we used kennels after checking them out. We've been driving all the way up to the kennel in Beltsville but I've heard good things about Cheseapeake Pet Resort.

3. While I described what we do, a friend of mine (without kids) goes everywhere with his dog. He has a book that has lists of all the pet friendly places you can go in the country and plans his trips based on that book. Mostly, he goes to pet friendly B&Bs.

I used to take Tug's to a kennel but now I have something set up with someone that we watch each other's dogs. I also watch my neighbor's dog for her and the dog comes to my house.

Tuggy gets a playmate for a few days, and the dogs get taken care of. We have the fenced in backyard, so it makes it easy.

If we can't take our little guy with us, we use Chesapeake Pet Resort. I have no complaints with them and he always comes home happy. We also have shared pet sitting with someone I work with. That's less expensive for both families, and the dogs get a playmate for a week.
