Doggy body odor

My two cockers are stinky girls. Of course they go to the barn with me almost daily wich does not help their odor at all. But they just have an almost "wet dog" smell to them at all times. If we bathe them they smell ok for a day, then they stink again. it smells bad when they scratch and our house smells like dirty dog. How often is too often to bathe. The one does have dry skin so I am worried about drying her out more. Any special soap that works for deoderising? I was looking at skunk stink remover in walmart yesterday. I know a little of the problem is their ears. I do try to keep them clean, but they often get a lil smelly. Any tips.
Not taking them to the farm is not an option.

Stop bathing them so much. Ruins their natural oils, causing them to itch. What type of food are you feeding? Give them fish oil in their food, that will help their coats.

They do not get bathed often. Usually every 8 weeks or so, actually less often than that. We dont like to bathe any of our animals often because of the oils being removed. I do not even tend to use soap on my horses before a show, just hose and brush.
I'll have to look at the bag. I think the feed is purina One? Will try the fish oil for the one. She has always had dry skin. I find that black dogs and other animals tend to have drier skin than others. Not just because you can see the dander but it seems the skin is actually more dry.

purina one isn't a good dog food its got tons of fillers in it. try switching to a limited ingredient diet. I do the new balance by dick van patten. It helped bruno big time.

You might try a TBS of plain yogurt every day in their food.

What would the yogurt do?

It's a probiotic and can help with the yeast infection in the dog's ears. Most of the problems with dogs with flappy ears is caused by yeast. You can also use diluted white vinegar and wipe out the ears.

I'd also switch foods and get rid of the corn. Corn is a HUGE contributer to allergies and yeasty ears.

:yeahthat: (and Catt knows this next part it not towards her...:huggy:)

rule of thumb... if you buy your dog food at the same place you buy your food... ITS CRAP! There are only a few foods from PETCO I would buy..... but for a good food that is not full of fillers you will have to go to a store that sells nothing but dog food. There are two great stores in Solomons and they offer great foods at good prices. (for the quality of food you are buying)

All of our dogs were Nutro-Max and we had no problems with them.

The new one is on IAMS (from the kennel/breeder) - I asked around the kennel and everyone of the other owners have kept theirs on IAMS so we are following suite, and we switched Hoover's 2 Chi's over and they are doing great on it. :yay:

I've never tried it? Is it that bad?

I have heard this over and over, so that is why I asked the other owners... none of them said anything about health problems which is of course my major concern.

We were talking about moving her over to Nutro-Max like we did with the others as we know the success we had.

Horsey Girl
Try this dog shampoo - regular shampoos are hard on their coat

My dog likes to roll around in dead animals at the farm all the time so i have to bath her about 1 x per week.. because she also likes to sleep on the beds and furniture.. this recipe keeps their coat from getting too itchy and they smell really good

1 pint of liquid dish soap such as Dawn or Ivory
1 pint of water
1 pint of apple cider vinegar

We def stay away from Iams a friend fed our dogs some once and all the dogs had bloody squirts. So what Are some good dog foods? We usually get our dog food from walmart and prob will not change that. I will cook rice and chicken for the dogs before i spend more on dog food in a week than I spend on my own food. lol
We used to use the applecider vinegar and dish soap on the dogs when we bathed them for 4-h shows and such. If the girls can find dead stuff or old dry horsey poo they like to have a good roll in it too. But that is not why they are stinky all the time.
Will try the yogurt. I have been using ear cleaner on them and it is helping with the insane amt of wax but does not seem to help the smell much..course the ear cleaner stuff has its own odor.
