Dogs and Allergies Problems????

My baby will be 2 in September. We spoil him. Lately he keep scratching alot. We know dogs get allergies alot form certain foods. We have cut everything out of his diet and hes been on the steroids to clear up the last break out. We don't want keep having to give him meds. The only thing he gets now is dry food. He doesn't scratch as much as he used to, but something is still causing him to break out and we just cannot figure it out. I imagine there is something in the dry food that still doesn't agree with him. Any suggestions on a food. We have been trying to find the all natural stuff. We know not to give dogs wheat, soy and corn. It just seems like all the food you see, those are the first 3 ingredients.

Please help.

My dog has had allergy problems for almost 5 years. He is allergic to several things, including grass (!!). We tried to manage his diet with different prepared food and for over 2 months, only fed him canned rabbit (very expensive) and pumpkin. There seemed to be no diet allergy. He still scratched and chewed on himself. Your vet might have another solution, I know we have tried many different solutions including allergy shots and meds over the years and steroids are just the only thing that works.

If those are the 1st 3 ingredients you see, I am guessing you are buying foods at big chain stores or the grocery store. There are many good quality grain free foods out including Taste of the Wild and EVO.
Some people switch to raw when all else fails. It can be a lot of work to feed a dog properly on raw. Be sure to educate yourself on it if you take that path.

Steroids are the worst thing you can do for a dog and allergies. You are whacking out his immune systems which triggers the allergies. Please do some research on dogs and allergies and learn what to feed your dog and what supplements you should use.

i would start looking into holistic dog foods, yes they are more expensive but so much better for you dog. I would go to clippers canine cafe in Solomons and maybe talk to the lady that owns the store. She helped me when i was trying to find the right food for my dog. They sell pretty much all holistic dog foods and even have stuff on feeding raw.

I have my dog on a lamb & millet dry food right now and his allergy issue doesn't appear to be getting any better yet and it's been a month (I was told to give it 2-3 months) .... so I hope by the time we get through the next 20 lb bag he will be better. If not I will be trying another type of food.

but the crazy thing is.. .if I had put my dog on that.. he may not have stopped as well... seeing that he allerigic mostly to lamb and rice!

I did a blood test with him... although not a 100% it gave me a place to start.

Yes the vet can test your do for allergies (just like people). It's expensive, but worth it if your dog has bad allergies. Then they can also get allergy shots if all else fails. Depending on what they're allergic to, they'll mix up a proper dosage of allergy meds for your pup. Mine have seasonal allergies just like people, but my female is also highly allergic to ALL dyes in foods! The dyes in the food almost killed her before we found out! She's only 8 lbs and she lost 2 lbs before we figured out that it was the dyes that were making her so sick!!! Thank God we found that out before it was too late!

my dog is highly allergic to dust mites and a few other things. I had the allergy testing done, have tried all kinds of medicines, etc. best thing seems to be giving benadryl when its really bad, i use dog food for dogs with sensitive systems and skin and they make a febreeze spray that is specifically for dust mite allergies so that helps too.

I highly recommend Taste of the Wild -this is the only thing that help my schnauzer, we still aren't sure what he is allergic to but this help. Vet thinks it might be to leaves or grass but could be food as well. Got some samples at Peppers and the stuff works great - no more bumps or itching.

I had a friend suggest Taste of the Wild, but since we are BOTH distributors of the Flint River Ranch (FRR) pet foods, it was better that I try the other FRR foods first (currently he's on Lamb & Milllet). FRR is about to introduce a holistic line of pet foods, so I will likely try that when it is introduced.

I saw red bumps on his chin so it was suggested I get rid of his plastic food bowl for a ceramic or stainless steel bowl. I did that and in just a few days the red bumps appear to be going away.

I wish I could find a solution to his allergy issue as quickly so the stinky smell he has would stop.

My vet suggested giving my dog one Vitamin E pill a day to see if it made any difference. She has stopped scratching, her hair has grown back and her coat is shiny and soft again.

Interesting that my Boxer's paws get red along with a rash on her belly. Vet told me that there is a mold that pops up here during the spring and fall wet seasons. She licked her paws constantly. I changed her food to Beneful and sprayed her paws with miconazole nitrate (Desenex). This is the same medicine prescribed by the vet except ten dollars cheaper than the pads.
Stopped the paw problem right away. The belly redness comes and goes, mainly with the seasons.
