I saw an episode today on the today show this morning and they said that dogs can't warm themselves up when they are outside. They also said if you aren't going to be out there with the dog not to leave him/her out there as dogs can't say oh i am cold and ready to come in. They also said NOT to leave your dogs outside all day/night even if they are outdoor dogs to give them some place warm to go (like the basement or a room in the house that has easy to clean up floor ie kitchen laundryroom if you have one).

I know one guy who comes into the store i work in and his dogs are outside dogs he has a trailer (the kind people live in) that the dogs are living in now that its too cold out and the trailer has a woodstove in it for heat for the dogs and they stay in there all day while the owners are at work and they go out when they get home for a little bit then back into the trailer for the night with heat and warm doggy beds. I can't see how anyone can leave there dogs out in the cold. The lady did say that dogs have no way of warming themselves up even though they do have fur it doesn't keep them warm at all (even cold weather dogs they say have no way of warming up either) so if you aren't going to be out there all day with the dog they say not to leave them out at all only when you are out there and bring them in when you come in.

Sorry I rambled but there are a few people that I think should see this(not naming names or any of that) or maybe go to the todays shows website and see if they have the clip on there about it to see what I am talking about.

I feel so bad when I let my dogs out my Shiba WONT come in, its literally an hour out there before he is ready to come in (YES! he is VERY stubborn), even in the snow. His feet have got to be cold. I feel bad for an hour, I couldnt imagine all day. He lays in the snow rolls in it everything. I think he is slightly CRAZY! Thanks for the info! I figure he will come in when he is cold, its not worth the fight if he doesnt want to come in!

I feel so bad for dogs left outside in kennels. A few houses down from me there are 3 dogs that are always outside. I haven't seen them lately so hopefuly the owner took them in. I love my doggie door and my dogs do too!

Before man had heated homes.... I'd think a lot of the breeds didn't exist. I know our Boxers cannot tolerate the cold. They have very short coats and the structure of their face/snout (brachycephalic) make it very difficult for them to breathe in extreme cold and heat.

I was just thinking of stories about the guys in sleds finding their dogs from the frozen breath coming out of little holes in the snow. I can't see a chiwawa pulling that off though.

A house dog is one thing (and I believe they could survive too) but these kooks act as if all dogs will freeze when it gets cold. Deer, horses, cows, squirrels.... the list goes on all have short hair and survive quite well outside.

My dogs love the cold weather.
Seems like they have more energy and are more playful.

I've been concerned about the cold weather and it getting worse. I'd like to have seen the Today Show interview the OP mentioned seeing. That's why we've been trying to capture the stray dog I spoke about in my previous thread titled, "Anyone can foster a stray, fearful dog?" It appears that he must have some place that he's bunking down in an area next to where we visit him. We've also enclosed the trap cage quite well to be a shelter if he'd use it. We've not yet untied the latch since we want him to become comfortable with going in.

Or an Alaskan Malamute like I have. With all the fur she has, it must feel like an oven to her when she's inside. She's only inside when at bedtime and when we aren't home. Summer time is completely different. We won't leave her out very long because even with blowing her coat, she still has a massive amount of fur.

Oh man, they turned out awesome. Ott's had about 10 already.

I was going to bake some cookies but I don't have any eggs, or butter for that matter. Oh well, I had some from Christmas that I put in the freezer, I'll pop them in the microwave for a few seconds and pretend like I just baked them. :killingme
