Dogs on Deployment

Military members nation-wide confront a multitude of problems during their career. The last problem they want to worry about is what to do with their beloved family pet when it's time for them to deploy. Many service members have limited, to no options for their pets when they have to go overseas and many have relinquished their pets to shelters when they have nowhere else to go. Dogs On Deployment is a 501(c)(3) national non-profit which provides a central online database for service members to search for individuals or families who are willing to welcome a Dog On Deployment into their home for the length of their owner's deployment.

I love this website! It is such a great idea to help our Military! I am in contact with them about adding reptiles to the list because I would be willing to board them for our Military. This is a very cool idea!

I would be willing to care for Iguanas during deployment myself. I don't know enough about the other reptiles to care for them. What a great organization this is. I just have one gripe about people in the Military. Why get any animal when you know there is a possibility of getting deployed?

Habit, companionship, love, undying loyalty...selfishness.

Sometimes, you are very lonely and an animal finds you.

Sometimes, you think you are stable and only doing in-country transfers with your family and find out you are all transfering to somewhere like Guam for 4 years.

Sometimes, you come home from deployment and your spouse is shacking up with someone else and you need to move back into the barracks and find a home for your pet.

Why do people get pets and then give them up as soon as they have a baby?

This, I have never understood. (unless baby was allergic)

what if baby were a special needs baby? What if baby got cancer at 2 months old. I'm sure there are circumstances. What if one of the parents lost their job? Endless reasons.

and i'm sure there are those that just get rid of dog because of baby.

Pets are the next best thing for cancer patients, special needs, and just about all the other ailments people get. It's called pet therapy and it is proven to work great!

Dogs are cheaper...rehome the kid.

We actually thought about rehoming one of our cats after the boy child was born. She wasn't mean to him or anything, but he very obviously stressed her out. To the point she was licking herself bald in patches. Fortunately we managed to get it resolved.
