Dogs toenail

one of my dogs toenails was cut to short by accident as she tried to get away from my stepfather and jerked just as the nail was being cut and it bled. Can you tell me how I can go upon keeping it clean so she doesn't get an infected nail as she really won't let me go near her foot. I stopped the bleeding by putting a little sugar on it since we didn't have the syptic (sp) pencil. But we will be investing in one of them in case it happens again.

thanks cowgirl. I didn't think flour would work. You are saying she will keep it clean enough that it wont get infected?

CG is right... it shouldn't get infected.

If you are in a pinch ever again .... use something that the blood can clot with such as flour, cornstarch or you can use a bar of soap. The bar of soap would act like a "cork". My vet always told me it would work - I just laughed at him, up until I cut my dogs nail too short. That was the first thing I could grab. Worked like a charm. :yay:
