My Mom has 2 shihtzus and one of the girls has HORRIBLE allergies, shes been to the vet, been on special dog food, many different homemade diets, we would have to bathe her all the time, used different shampoos, medicines, u name it we tried it. Her skin would be all red and irritated and oily, and she didnt look like a happy girl (

Finally my Mom got her diet right. Only Spinach and Chicken THIGHS (i say THIGHS because it can not be chicken breasts or anything else, just THIGHS). Her skin has completely cleared up, she isnt stinky anymore, not oily and has so much energy and is runnign around and happy again.

Im just posting this for others who might have problems with their dogs having allergies. Maybe this is a diet u can try. :yay:

She cooks the chicken thighs with the spinach in a crock pot, enoguh for 5 days or a week, then divies (sp?) it out into containers for the week.

She is probably a much happier dog now. I am glad to hear of your Mom's persistance to find what works.
Though, I have read many times that spinach is not good for dogs.

I wil have to look into the spinach thing, but it seems its the only thing she can eat with out her allergies acting up. If its harmful I guess we will have to find a substitute for the spinach, I know she used to give her green beans, so if spinach isnt good maybe we will try the chicken thighs and beans. Thank you )

I think tonight i will be pulling out chicken and greenbeans for bruno as she loves both and will mix it with her dog food and see if i can get her to eat it. I am willing to try anything as I care about her and don't want her to be sick in my apt again because if she doesn't eat her breakfast and dinner she gets sick.

I don't own a blender :(. tonight her dinner is going to be ground beef and veggie medly over dog food and see if she will eat it. I am going to make enough to last a couple of days or so. I got the ground beef out defrosting now to cook up at lunchtime so it will be cold at dinner time to give her as I don't want her to burn her mouth on hotfood. I have to go to the grocery store and buy some more chicken thighs for her this weekend. I am going to also ask my mom if i can borrow her blender from her too to puree the stuff i put on brunos food so she can't pick it out. That was a great idea KVF thanks a million.

Well, if that works just buy a blender. With all the money u spend on trying different foods that im sure is costly, if blending her food with chicken works, it would be a good investment...

yup a blender would be a great investment. I also learned petco will take back opened dogfood as they guarantee it so 2 bags of dogfood will be going back this saturday and I will be picking up something else as she needs the doggy kibble as i can't afford to just feed her human food.

I do know this she loves dehydrated chicken and regular chicken so i am going to try to find something that has pieces of chicken in it for her that has no corn in it as shes allergic to corn.

I dont think chicken thighs and veggies are that expensive  especially when u are going out and having to buy her the expensive dog food.

Clippers sells tubes of different types of meat and veggie tubes. We've been getting Mily rabbit and veggie tubes and mixing it with probiotic powder and yogurt. Talk about a PITA. She was on really good food before but kept on flaring so we went on the food merry go round again and were about to have her tested again. We tried mixing our own and viola! Her coat looks super awesome and her breath is about a thousand times better. Its expensive but as long as she's not uncomfortable its worth it.

They're not but that's not exactly a good diet. You need to add some supplements. Plus...she's feeding a very large dog.

I'm doing the food merry-go-round with my boy right now - the groomer at Petsmart said his smell may be a food allergy - so when I took him to the vet they asked me if he was licking his paws and rubbing his face on the floor, I said yes! I THOUGHT he was just an obsessive foot licker (that's NOT a word?) - but apparently that's a sign of allergic reaction.

So I switched him from the Standard Flint River Ranch food to the Lamb & Millet food - but I heard I need to wait at least 3 months to see if his condition gets better.

The fact that chicken is being fed to your dog means no allergy to chicken I assume - so the allergy is to something else in commercial pet foods? It was my thought from the vet that trying a different type of protein was the answer usually (like me switching to lamb based food) but that doesn't appear to be the case for you?

Catt I tried something new with bruno today. I had some ground beef in the freezer and I took it out and cooked some of it up. then i took my tuna masher to it and made the meat really fine. I put some in brunos food and she went to town and ate almost all of the 3 cups of food. I also have chicken so I think I am going to do one day beef one day chicken so she doesn't get bored and decide not to eat her food. I think bruno just likes a variety and gets bored with the same thing every day in her food. I don't put that much ground beef in there. I only did about 1/2cup if that of the meat and mixed in in her food so she couldn't just pick it out and eat what she wanted of it and she ate her food :).

Im sorry but dogs do not know what variety is. What they do know is how to play the game and how to run us. I watch it in my pack.... my dogs have ate the same food 2x's a day for over a year with no complaining at all... now I have one dog that does not want to eat unless she feels the other dog wants her food. She will wait till the other dog is done and she guards her food while she eats... she plays mind games.

They know how to do this.... if she loses the game... she doesnt eat. The next feeding - guess what - she eats right off the bat! She doesnt give anyone the chance to steal food, she doesnt screw around... she eats beacuse she doesnt want to go hungry!

I have made her go over a day without food for doing that stupid crap.. :ohwell:..... In my household.... I you act like a butt..you will not get fed!
