In 1833, Britain used 40% of its national budget to buy freedom for all slaves in the Empire. Britain borrowed such a large sum of money for the Slavery Abolition Act that it wasn’t paid off until 2015.
This means that living British citizens helped pay for the end of the slave trade with their taxes.
The French, however, blockaded and threatened the destruction of Haiti unless it compensated them for the loss of money they experienced from the end of the slave trade. This is why Haiti is still so poor - they have never recovered. So much for Liberté, égalité, fraternité

Just going to point out that they bought the freedom....from Brittish slave owners. So the government borrowed money to bail out their richest citizens on the backs of their tax payers who largely never owned slaves. That doesn't necessary paint the virtuous image that you think it does.

When the US freed the slaves they didn't pay the owners for them, they instead confiscated the land/property of much of the owners and gave it to the slaves (remember 40 acres and a mule)?

From my friend in Kenya

You won't believe it, but many former French colonies don't have a Central bank /treasury to date. All taxes collected are first sent to France, then France has to approve spending/ projects by these countries. Crazy crap.

There weren't around 620,000 deaths associated with it though, so you pays your money and makes your choice........
Bingo. Lincoln initiated an unnecessary war and his reasons for doing so were certainly not because of some deep-seated desire to free slaves. He did fully support shipping them back to Africa though.

I'm sure it fell on deaf ears except the part about England going to great lengths to end slavery.

Nobody arguing for reparations ever wants blame to be placed on anyone from Africa.

My feeling about reparations is, at this point - who qualifies? My daughter is from Ethiopia within the last 15 years. She's never had a slave ancestor.
On the other hand - **I JUST MIGHT** however distant. I do think anyone receiving reparations must be able to prove their case and show they haven't already been given some form of reparation.

Then comes the hair-splitting. Someone like Obama had a father from Kenya - who was not a slave and a white mother. So he doesn't get any. But Michelle does - but she also has multi-racial roots, including Irish, English and Native American.

Should someome like - me - get as much as someone like - Michelle Obama - is there a point where someone who is clearly *white* not eligible?

How far back does the concept of reparations go?
Now this - this is where it gets - silly. Do Egyptians owe Jews reparations, for years of slavery?
Do different descendants of Native American tribes, who did the same to one another - you know, for mass sacrifice of people and slaughter?

Ok something simpler - does Germany owe reparations to the nations they destroyed? They killed tens of millions of Russians. And the Japanese, for the tens of millions they slaughtered.

My beef with reparations is you can NEVER STOP POINTING BLAME - but you can fix the present. MONEY isn't going to fix it. It just assuages the consciences of those who really don't want to do anything but toss money, preferably someone else's money.
