Don't fly AirTran

I had one of the worst commercial airline experiences this weekend by trying to fly AirTran. I'm putting this out so you all forewarned - if you can avoid flying AirTran, I highly recommend doing so.

I was flying to the Northeast Saturday afternoon, returning Sunday morning in order to attend a reunion Saturday night. We pre-checked in & selected our seats on the internet before we left for the airport. Everything was running okay. Got to the airport and was informed AirTran cancelled our flight (not delayed - cancelled). They would not put us on another airline because they do not have such agreements with other airlines. They would not refund our $ because they said it was weather related and they don't refund $ for flights cancelled due to weather related reasons. Mind you other airlines traveling to the same airport were on time or moderately delayed (40 minutes). AirTran agreed to put us on a 5:40 flight, three and a half hours later from our original flight. That would have gotten us to the reunion a little late but we could still make it. So we agreed and they told us to go to the gate and we would be given a "customer care kit". We go to the gate and are informed they don't have any customer care kits and even if they did, they would not give us one because they don't give out those kits for weather related delays!
So we're waiting for the 5:40 flight and at 3:00 they delay the 5:40 flight until 8:30. I get us booked on a SouthWest flight to a nearby airport that would get us to the reunion in time. But there's one problem - DH checked his luggage on the AirTran flight. We try to get his luggage back and are informed that they no longer have the luggage. They try to convince us that it already went on the flight to our destination. It took an hour to get them to look again because the flight to our destination never left! They spend over an hour and a half looking for the luggage and we miss our Southwest flight. The bright side is they found his luggage. The not-so-bright side is we went home and missed the reunion. :bawl: AirTran stinks.

I would definitly be contacting the corporate offices of Air Tran.
Not only that, but contact a lawyer and see if there's any recourse. That's bullcrap, cancelling your flight, then refusing to refund your money, then screwing up your luggage so you miss your other flight.

Sorry you missed your reunion :frown:

No wonder they have tighter security at airports now :banghead: maybe to protect their dumb employees

Oh yes, a lawyer (my DH) will be contacting their corporate office.

It was ridiculous - the AirTran employee was literally sitting down chatting on the phone for an hour in a room enclosed by glass walls so we could all see her and then came out and told the group of us that she didn't find the luggage. There was one lady in tears because she was missing a wedding (luckily it wasn't HER wedding). Her and her husband wanted to reach out and pound the AirTran employee who did not find their luggage. Somehow DH and I kept our wits. DH said he wanted to get a camera phone just so he could take pictures of the employees and everything that was happening because no one would ever believe it was this bad. That reminded me I had my digital camera with me and took pictures while the AirTran employee was chatting away on the phone for a hour. It's amazing how upset folks get when you take their picture without their consent  But she did manage to find DH's bags after that.

That sucks. Especially because you missed your family reunion. But as someone who travels quite frequently, the scenario you explained can happen to any airline. I've seen it time and time again.

In the future when you purchase your tickets you may want to check to see if there is an option available (cost $$) which you can get as a sort of "ticket cancellation insurance."

Also, it is probably a good idea to leave yourself two travel days for any flight that would take two days to drive. That way if you get stranded in scenario such as this again, you can simply rent a rental car. So if your next family reunion is on a saturday afternoon, it would be a good idea to leave thursday afternoon/evening, then get a hotel for the extra nights. Yes it costs more, but you don't have to play hurry up and wait, AND you will always make that VERY important reunion, wedding, vacation, etc...

Dustin,

Your advice is all well and good, but Monday morning quarterbacking something so screwed up, that should have never happened doesn’t make it less Marianne’s fault. This was incompetence, plain and simple, on the part of the airline. She and her husband paid for a service they never received. If anyone ever offered me “flight cancellation insurance” I’d tell him or her to cram it. There is no way that can be legit. That is like ordering dinner in a restaurant and the stove that is suppose to cooks it breaks. You didn’t give me the service; you shouldn’t get my money.

Marianne,

This is one of those situations that you wish you could lay in the middle of the airport and thrash around, throwing a temper tantrum for everyone to see.

I’m sure this airline will go down the shitter in due time.

Didn't these guys, AirTrans, used to be Value-Jet? Might be a good thing they didn't get off the ground.

It's cancellation insurance in case you want to cancel your flight yourself....there are monitors in every airport that will tell you if a flight is delayed or cancelled before you even check in...you can even check those on the internet sometimes...or just call the airline before you even leave the house.

All I was saying is this is normal for ALL airlines. And it's their fault they can't run their business the way it should be run. If someone HAS to get somewhere by a certain time they should always leave enough time for Murphy.

The only airline I would recommend to anyone is Southwest. They seem to have their stuff together the best, albeit still crappy at times, but never as bad as the others.

:yeahthat: I don't know if they used to be value-jet but DH told me two things of similar significance (1) if this is the part of AirTran that you DO see, imagine the part you don't see -- like their plane maintenance and (2) AirTran is not doing well financially and, consequently, is doing things to save $ like scheduling just-in-time flights. I'm the first person to say that I don't know anything about these two points other than what I just typed. But apparently DH had read some things about AirTran and was not happy when he learned that I booked our flights on AirTran. Which gets to the reason I posted this thread - to warn folks.

I had left ourselves four hours in case of delays or other unplanned happenings. That should have been enough. If we had left at the same time & driven straight to the reunion, rather than to the airport, we would have made it there in time. If AirTran had just booked us on a different airline (because there were flights going there every hour), we would have been fine. Any other airline would have done that, but AirTran would not.

Yes, they are in fact what was left of the old Valu-Jet airline, however they did replace all the old DC-9s they were flying with newer Boeing 717 and 737 aircraft. Their average fleet age is in step with Southwest and JetBlue. I have never flown them, so I can't comment on their lack of customer service. It definately sounds like they are VERY lacking on the customer service side from your description, Marrianne. Weather delays are one thing, but if another airline can get you to our destination and they won't, they should definately refund your money. Period.

That's funny... My ex flew Valujet -er- AirTran a couple of weeks ago and loved it. Then again, her flight wasn't cancelled.

Why in the world would you check bags for less than a 24 hour trip? :ohwell:
