But I can't find a recipe for old fashioned macaroni, beef, tomato dish. I remember it from childhood and actually most recently loved it in a lean cuisine version which I cannot locate again. Anyone know how to make it, I know it can't be hard. Tomato sauce, beef, elbow macaroni????

My mom called it goulash.

We call it GOULASH :)

Fry ground beef and pour off fat - 1 to 1.5 pounds depending on how many you are feeding.

Your favorite tomato sauce, homemade, ragu, prego, etc.

Elbow macaroni - 8 ounces or so.

Fry beef, drain. Add tomato sauce and let simmer while you cook the macaroni. Drain water off macaroni. Add to tomato sauce/beef mixture, stir and simmer for a few.

Can sprinkle with parmesean cheese. Eat and enjoy.

I also do another version with same recipe above using a larger noodle, example penne or large elbows. Mix all together, bake at 350 for about 30 minutes. Sprinkle with mozarella and allow to melt/brown.....YUM!! I call this PASTA BAKE

Enjoy :-D

One of my favorites!

You brown a lb of ground beef, and boil up half a package or so of macaroni (or some other dry pasta). Drain the beef, mostly, then add a can of diced tomatoes, a small tomato paste, thin it with beef broth, a pinch of salt, a few shakes of W-sauce, black pepper, red pepper if you want it spicy, and simmer for 5 or 10 mins. Add the drained cooked pasta, voila!

I've also added chili seasoning to it for kind of a chili-mac thing.

Had Hungarian goulash in Moscow. Spicy! Involved a lot of paprika, chunks of beef, no cheese and surprisingly no tomatoes. My mom used to call the ground beef/tomato/pasta dish (which is my favorite, too) slumgullion. (She was from Pittsburgh...heh). At church dinners it was called a Hot Dish.

I make mine more like chili mac and add chili powder and cumin, but my mom's recipe was more like this:

sweat an onion in a little oil until transparent, (or be lazy and just add a chopped onion while you brown the ground beef) drain off the fat, through in a can of stewed tomatoes, 2 cans of water (use the tomato can), salt and pepper, green pepper chopped if you like it, a bay leaf and then throw in the macaroni. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally and then add more fluid (water, broth, your choice) if it looks like it's getting dry. Stir in your cheese when it's done.

I guess if you wanted low fat, you could use turkey meat - using canned stewed tomatoes instead of spaghetti sauce means no added sugars, and use a low fat cheese, or skip the cheese and use a whole wheat pasta.

Thanks - I know what I'm making for my dinner tomorrow night!

Pretty much this, but I use tomato soup and add a bit of salt and sugar to 'brighten' it. Brown the meat with diced onion. Sometimes use elbows, sometime use spaghetti. If spaghetti was used, my mom called it American Chop Suey.

I feel like it MUST be elbow macaroni !! :buddies:

My Momma's goulash is similar and I make it all the time. Brown ground beef (season with salt and pepper), add a chopped green bell pepper, a chopped onion and a can of tomatoes (she uses whole tomatoes but I use diced) and while that's cooking, cook elbow noodles then serve it together. It's seriously too easy :yum:
