NASCAR.COM - NASCAR adopts double-file restarts in Cup Series races - Jun 4, 2009

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR on Thursday announced a change to its race format with the addition of "Double-File Restarts -- Shootout Style" throughout each race. Beginning with this weekend at Pocono Raceway, the first- and second-place drivers will line up side-by-side as the green flag flies for each restart.

"We've heard the fans loud and clear: 'double-file restarts -- shootout style' are coming to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series," said NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France. "This addition to the race format is good for competition and good for the fans."

It's about time. They don't start races single file, so why would you re-start them that way. And it's awesome that they give the leader the choice of which position he takes the re-start green, inside line or outside line.
NASCAR should have changed this when they came up with the "lucky pooch" rule.

Should be Interesting! I take it that the Lead Car has the option of Inside or Outside . I think I heard that NASCAR is stilling keeping the "Lucky Dog" with that car being the last inside or outside lead lap car and lap cars follwing in double file????

Sounds like a good idea to me - especially since the leader gets the option of inside or outside. I hated seeing late (not last 10 laps) race restarts, especially on short tracks, where it took forever for 4th or 5th place cars to have a chance to catch the leaders because of all the lapped cars.
