I recall learning about tariffs in elementary school history class. And it was just that the US & other countries had them and some times they caused disputes.
I just found out that the US has a very low tariff rate.
Currently, the countries with the highest
tariff rates in the world are Bermuda (23.8 percent), Cayman Islands (20.4 percent), and
Belize (17.8 percent). The United States has one of the lowest tariff rates in the world, at 1.5 percent, while the global average among all nations is about 2.6 percent.
I understand they can be used to protect a domestic producer from a foreign competitor that is underselling them. Especially is that country's government is aiding in the undercutting.
I notice a pattern every time Trump wants to do something. The lefties, progressives & the media instantly become subject matter experts. It happened during covid, with wearing mask. Then it shifted to wildfires causes & effects. Now all the talking heads are tariff experts. And no matter which way Trump leans, that is surely the approach that will get us all killed, start world war 3 or cause the earth to implode. Ivermectin, the virus came from China, they are eating pets, lockdowns don't work, D. E. I. is a disaster, schools should be open, walls work, they aren't sending their best, biden is weak, the dossier is a hoax, the DOJ was weaponize against him, there is a lot of wasteful spending in the government, etc. are just some of the examples of the media getting it wrong and being smug about their stance on these issues.
And a lot of the times elected officials accused Trump of doing something shady, they themselves were doing the exact same thing.
So lets see how this all plays out. Deporting illegals will crash our economy if you listen to some on the left. Now tariffs are going to tank the economy. You know if Trump is right about any of this, he will never get the credit they deserve. They will somehow point to any success as being attributed to the administration of the first sitting president with dementia.
