Charles Co. Dr. Gustavus Brown Elementary School students get a ‘jump start’ on the school year

Second and third graders at Dr. Gustavus Brown Elementary School are brushing up on their math and reading skills with the school’s Jump Start summer program.

For three hours a day over two weeks, students work with teachers in areas that they will be tested on during the school year. All Dr. Brown second and third graders were invited to the program with about 31 signing up, said Karen Lewis, the school’s principal. The students spend an hour-and-a-half on math and then another 90 minutes on reading, with a snack break in between. While the lessons are presented as games, “it’s very focused and targeted learning,” Lewis said. Students are also counting down the days to their field trip to the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.

Students said they look forward to coming to school, even in summer. “You will know stuff when you go back to school,” said second grader Cataleya Gerhart.

“And you get to spend time with friends,” added Ya’daysha Livers, a second grader.
