Drive In Theater

Just curious was there ever a drive movie in the southern maryland area? Are there any even left in Maryland?

I sure miss the ones I went to when I was a kid. Even if I wasn't interested in the movie I played on the playground and had a good ole time.

Fourth of July fireworks were the best at a drive in.

Southern Maryland had several but they've disappeared over the years. The last one to go was the 301 Drive-In in Waldorf. It occupied the ground where the Festival Way Shopping Center is now.

I went to one of the last times they were showing movies back in '86' or '87' I think.

There was one in Lexington Park/California not sure which. It was on the northbound side of Rt. 235 in the area of the Lowes.

There were several on 210 including the Super Chief in Ft. Washington behind the Swann Creek Shopping Center.

I wouldn't mind seeing one come back myself. Had a lot of fun at the Drive-In's as both a kid and in my teens/20's.

235 Drive in

How well I remember the old 235 drive In. I use to live across the road from it. My new bride and I lived on the third floor of Long's apartments. Owned by Willard Long. Couldn't afford many movies back then. We could just see the screen at an angle. On the weekend the speakers were turned up so loud that we could hear the movie. Broke my heart to see it go.

The 235 Drive in was on the grounds of the old Lowe's - new BAE Systems lot.

Don't forget the ABC Drive a few miles north of the Super Chief of 210 - it was razed a dozen years ago to make way for some more cookie-cutter townhomes. A dozen years later, it still sis empty!

How about the Ranch Drive In in Clinton...climbed many a fence at that place!

Further north was the Central Avenue Drive In, although they went "blue" near the end of their run.

The only one left I think is located somewhere near Baltimore. Worth a drive, if just to show your kids how it was in the "good ol' days."

Keep your eyes out for DRIVE IN BLUES, a half hour show on the death of the drive ins - surfaces on PBS every so often.

Hey my hubby and I take the kids camping alot. I mentioned finding a Drive In and parking the camper at a near by camp ground! My husbands family loved the idea. Thought it would be cool to relive those memories.

Have you been there? I was wondering if it was nice. I would hate to go to a drive in and feel like I've been dumped off in a crime zone.

Moffett, Sunnyvale & Winchester Drive-In's

We used to go all the time as a kid. Dressed in our pajamas in the back of the station wagon. Always felt funny playing in the playground before the movie in my jammies though.

Then of course it was all three for fun in high school. Moffett has long ago been razed for a walk-in theatre complex, Sunnyvale for condos and last time I was home (California) Winchester was still there but has been closed for many, many years.

Sure wish we had one around here. :bawl:

My father told me that one of the "odd" jobs (long time ago!) he did was to build that drive-in screen at ABC drive-in on Rt 210. I really enjoyed going to the drive-in as a kid. Lots of fond memories.

There was one in Calvert on Stoakley Road. The emissions station and other buildings are there now. These buildings along with the emissions station were on Theater Drive which changed to PF Blvd when it went through for the aquatic center
