Thank you for posting this helpful info! It's time to seal my driveway again and I need recommendations for a reputable, licensed local company. The folks I used last did a great job but the company is no longer in business. I'm in Charles near the SM line. Thanks!

Also, we had our driveway poured this summer and the very next day, a truckload of latinos pulled up while I was at work and told my wife they were there to seal the driveway (which we didnt ask, nor pay for), and that if they didnt, it would crack and while the guy was trying to con my wife into allowing these guys to seal it, 4 or 5 of these guys were unloading buckets and brushes like they were going to get started. My wife told them to leave immediately, which pissed the guy at the door off. BUt they did leave. Watch these guys. We did it ourselves. Wasnt too bad at all. And Ive got a large driveway.

You should probably wait until the spring to reseal it as the weather this winter will probably ruin what you've done. I'm not a professional, so you can ask an actual sealing company if you'd like, just my personal opinion based on what I hear around the office since we do paving as well. I can PM you the name of a company that we subcontract tomorrow.

What amazes me, frankly, is that the driveway sealing scam still exists over a quarter century after it was exposed!!??

Three basic drive-by improvement scams, historically, are/were the "barn painting scam", the "roof coating scam" (when metal/soldered and tin roofs were in abundance) and the "driveway sealing scam".

Well a couple things should be immediately apparent: I'm old enough to remember the first two and, I am astounded that the last one remaining still exists and could possibly still snare anyone. Stupid hurts.

Thanks for your input and I will definitely ask the best time to seal when I get an estimate. I'm a little worried about putting it off until spring because I have noticed a couple of places that look 'worn' and degraded. More importantly there's a nasty gouge from the front end loader clearing snow last winter that I suspect is only going to get worse.

Is it hard to seal it yourself? I'm thinking this is too big a DYI project for me because it's a BIG driveway and I've never done it before. Of course, that might all change after I see an estimate or two........Money is very, very tight this year.

A neighbor bought into the scam, but he knew what he was getting. They were going to do his drive for $100.00 which he was willing to pay just to have something on it and not have to do it himself.
He went to the bank for the money once they got started and when he got home, they were all sitting on the back of their truck, drive half finished. They told him it was going to cost $200.00 cause it was using more material than expected. His comment was something like..."okay, you wait here, I'll go call the Sheriff's office and have a deputy come and help us figure this out". Needless to say, they finished the job, collected the $100.00 and left.
They tried to pull a scam on top of a scam and in this case, it backfired on them.

We had Copenhaver handle our dirveway. Copenhaver Sealccoating and Striping have been around for a longg time and know what they are doing. For the time and energy and the price of materials, its worth the extra money to have a professinal come out and do it.

Their phone number and website: 301-862-2749 Copenhaver, sealcoating, striping, asphalt, somd

No, its not all that bad. But everyone is right, winter will ruin it, the asphalt has to have good heat to absorb the sealant. I think it wont take properly right now because its too cool. I did it when it was 80 out, and the sealant basically gets sucked right into the surface. If its too cold, it wont do that and you wont get a good watertight bond.

actually, if it has cracks you might want to do it before winter.

water runs into the cracks and gets under the driveway, then it freezes, when water freezes it expands, the cracks get bigger and the chunks of driveway come up when the ice lifts them.

spring and summer not as much of a worry because there is no freeze.

let me add that once done spring is the better time because it seals the cracks from winter and reduces the chance of bed failure from water running under the driveway.
That might be what the paving company lady is talking about. if so, she is right.
once sealed, maintain it in the winter. If in bad shape now, fix it before winter.

I emailed them to do mine 2 weeks ago. They responded that they'd schedule me soon as the weather was good. Haven't heard from them since. maybe I'll wait until spring.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was just offering what I had heard and I clearly don't have the experience in that department. You'll see me answering phones and cutting checks but not paving and sealing :yay:

Ever wonder how roads which get a lot more abuse than a driveway last for years without any sealing?
