OK, back from the trip!
Traverse City Michigan does NOT suck! I am sooooo going back someday in the summer. It seems like it is Maine minus the bugs and minus two months of winter.
Landed in Detroit, got the car, headed out and up I75. It looks like Michigan loves two things; golf courses and runnin' radar. I have never seen so many cops on an interstate. I've never seen so many golf courses either. Cop car, golf course. Cop car. Golf course. All the way up!
The car I rented was limited to 80 mph and has an incredibly annoying warning sound as you approach 80, incessant. Every time. Nothing the radio couldn't drown out but, I can live with the 80, lose the tone. In any event, I figure it saved me about $1,237,081.04 in speeding tickets so, there is that...
Lower Michigan is as flat as Oklahoma but, at least has trees. About half way there, things started to change for the (much) better; elevation changes, rolling terrain.
First gas stop, pick up towing a trailer full of hot rod snow machines, figured a bunch of 20-30 year olds would come out of the store. Wrong. They were ALL older than me! Upstate Michigan has, noticeably, less fat people. Other than Micheal Moore who, sadly, resides in TC, looks like a pretty active lot.
Snow starts there in November and doesn't melt. So, my now, most folks have 3-5' piled up in their yards and guard rails have long been replaced with ice banks.
Great food town. GREAT beer town. Great water town. Sightseeing, shopping, nice place.
Sad to leave and would not balk if I had to live there.
