Dry skin/acne problems

My daughter has mild acne and dry skin. She gets frustrated very easily because the products her friends use don't work for her. Most acne products are for those with oily skin, so they dry her out more. She gets most upset when she puts on makeup and it looks dry and powdery because her skin is flaky around the areas of outbreak.
For those who have this combination - or did or have a child that does - what products have worked best for you? What moisturizer? Acne med? Makeup foundation?

She is 13 so the self consciousness is at an all time high.

Have you tried a hydrating mask?

I'm having the opposite with my 13 year old. She has oily skin with mild acne on her forehead, nose, and chin.

I have weird skin as an adult. My skin is dry but I still get acne. The best thing is no make-up...but since that doesn't appear to be an option, let me tell you what works:
Do not use powder, it just makes everything look worse. Also don't use anything that says "matte" even eyeshadow. :twitch:

I've discovered I really really like Yves Rocher products. They are all natural and I don't break-out as bad.
I like the Bio skin products for cleansers and moisturizers as well as the Sebo version. Not heavy moisturizers and nice make-up removers.
Their make-up is great as well.
Yves Rocher USA - Your natural beauty cosmetics for skin & body care, fragrance, makeup and bath & shower.

Pixie shared this company a few years back, and I really like them as well
Everyday Minerals - Everyday Naturals
I had tried Bare Essentials makeup and it sucked for my skin. Seriously I looked funky. But this stuff is great and is applied similiarly. They also run regular promos and sales and give freebies away.

Makeup Forever is another make-up brand that's nice, but I'm not totally in love with, though their concealer is pretty great.

There are products that moisturize that is good for acne prone skin. Have her cleanse her face for acne (use a mild cleanser since she doesn't seem to have severe acne), but use an oil free moisturizer (preferably with vitamin C/E). I use one from Boots (sold in Target) but Clean & Clear makes one, and I think Olay too. There's a whole selection in the stores. Spot treat with 5% benzoil peroxide lotion. It'll take about 2-3 weeks for her to notice any changes.

added: she could try good old fashioned Witch Hazel as a toner.

I have had dry skin forever. when I was a teen, I thought because I had blemishes (never had terrible skin) that it was greasy..it wasn't until I had a prof facial (which I highly, highly recommend..so worth the money) that I finally figured out the key to my skin. First off with dry skin a lot of those hard bumps arent really pimples but rather skin cells building up under the skin..exfoliation is an amazing thing! you would think not too if you have dry skin, but its ESP important for dry skin. Just make sure all of the 'grains" are the same size...so no apricot scrub. exfoliation along with a good quality moisturizer cleared my skin up amazingly...until I got knocked up..:lmao: I got compliments all of the time on my complexion.

I use philosophy products (get em for a decent price on QVC) they aren't cheap..but I find they last me forever. I use the everyday exfoliation scrub (very gentle, I have sensative skin) the purity cleanser and the heavier moisterizer. I tried so much before I got to these products..and I love them, though I am sure the effect can be replicated by finding comparable products at the pharmacy.

What are her eating/drinking habits? That could play a lot into it.
Since she's given up sugar, for the most part, she is actually breaking out more. She cut back on sugar because a size 5 is FAT as her age?? And she drinks a good amount of water - less since school started since they think anyone who uses the bathroom is dealing drugs or starting a neoNazi uprising - plenty though at dance and at home. Eats vegetables and lean meats...

Also if this is the dancer, makeup off before dance. I know, I know, we loved to look beautiful at class, lol but the makeup and sweat combo is not a good one.

Not only that, but when she washes her face, she should remove the makeup first (using wipes or a makeup cleansing oil), then cleanse.

I have had dry acne prone skin all of my life. I am in my later twenties now and still have the same skin! I use Aveeno products. I find that they work great for my skin. I always take off my makeup and I use an oil free moisteriser in the morning and at night after I wash my face. Good luck and I hope your daughter finds what works for her skin!! I know exactly what she is feeling!

Thanks everyone. We'll look in to those products mentioned. Just don't have the cash to buy and toss until we find the right ones so I'll look for sample sizes.

I started using the Wexler products from bath and body about a month ago. They have a acne sample kit you can buy that isn't to expensive. It has worked wonders on my skin.

I use serious skin care on hsn. It's pricey... but it really works.

I have much the same skin type. Really dry, but a bit acne prone. Was REALLY bad back in middle/high school and wish I'd figured out how to deal with it then. My parents/relatives kept throwing all the extra strength garbage at me, which just made everything flare up worse.

Here's my daily line up which seems to work well (nothing expensive, thankfully!)

Aveeno Skin Brightening Daily Scrub
Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser
Neutrogena oil-free moisture (combination skin)

and for spot treatments I really like the Clean & Clear Invisible Blemish Treatment

The two cleansers don't dry me out horribly. If I forget to put the lotion on afterward I get a bit itchy, but my entire face doesn't flake off. The lotion is nice and lightweight and doesn't make me really oily.

I generally don't wear makeup, but when I do I keep it very light. I have a big poofy brush that I use to just dust on some powder (I like the Clinique powder... spendy, but it lasts me years since I don't use much). I stay as far from liquid makeup as possible. Junk clogs your pores and I swear it makes the flaking worse. I went to middle school with this girl and she would cake the crap on and halfway through the day her face would start to sweat and it would just be running off.... /shudder
