Verizon or not, something you have to realize is that your DSL is basically going to be going over Verizon wires, through Verizon switches and based out of Verizon CO's (central offices). And on top of that, Verizon charges other ISPs about 95% of what they charge for their own price so other ISPs are not likely to be able to sell their service a lot cheaper than what VZ does.

And, if you get another ISP to provide service, you will go through endless hours on customer service with Verizon saying "it's not our fault--it is your ISP" and your ISP saying "BS--it is Verizon's fault". This will go on and one for days. Been there--done that.

I don't like Verizon very much, but they really do have a stranglehold on a lot of DSL service.

No cable modems available down there?

I had heard that earlier - the fact that Verizon owns all of the lines associated with DSL.

That's why I quit Earthlink, knowing the service wasn't really theirs - but Verizon's

I've been with Verizon since last Sept., and have had no problems at all - so far.

PS: Staples, Radio Shack and Wal*Mart all sell cable modems.

Cable is (I've heard) the way to go except for the few folks close enough to Verizon switching stations. I went with satellite for a number of reasons, and I'm glad I did. Except for when weather interferes with the satellite - then I use dial-up Earthlink.

I started with AOL - about 4 years ago, and their system seemed to lock up my PC - darn near every session that I was online. I hear it's better since then, but someone told me about Earthlink, and I changed to them.

No problems with them, or none that they couldn't fix over the phone, walking me through the problems, mainly server identifications.

But when DSL became available here, I had to go with Verizon.............

I had Verizon and really enjoyed it. Now I am forced to deal with dial up and I am not a happy camper. Well, it looks like AOL until Verizon decides to service my area. :coffee:
