Ok.. just got the DVR (2 weeks ago now?) now let me try to explain - Got a new flat screen - that had the DVD hooked to it - played on input 1. K. The other smaller tv I had before getting the flat screen had the satellite and the VCR hooked to it. well, got the DVR and hooked it to the flat screen - which now plays on input 1. Do I hook the DVD player thru the DVR now?? will it automatically go on input 2? To be honest, the red, white and yellow cables are on input 2 on the back of the DVR but are playing on input 1.. Did I confuse u? TIA.

Then you should just have your cable box plugged into input 1, and your dvd player plugged into input 2. You cannot dvr anything coming from your dvd player. You just have to switch your tv from input 1 to input 2 whenever you want to watch a dvd. Is this what you are looking for or did i miss something??

You may have to use the TV remote to select the correct video input. You can tell it to use HDMI, Component, Composite, etc.... switch between them until you see the picture. it should be composite if you are using the yellow wire. Red and white are left and right sound channels.

He tried that on one of the other tv's and it worked fine and originally that dvd player was hooked into the flat screen (no satellite or nothing else was attached to it) and it played fine on input 1.

Try the DVD player on another TV to make sure it's working.

If you are getting sound and no video you need to check your cables. Make sure that you have the yellow (video) plugged into the yellow plug on both the dvd player and input 2 on the tv. It is easy to plug it into the wrong one.

What was the person speaking about a blue cable? Is there a blue cable I need to get? I'm pretty sure the cables are right, I checked them and he checked them but will definitely check again.. but whats a blue cable?

There's blue, green, red and black cables in addition to the red/white audio cables if you are using Component video, not to be confused with Composite video (single yellow wire, yellow jack to yellow jack).

I don't think that nomoney was talking about RGB cable. :lmao:

Neither am I. Component is not RGB.
When used without any other qualifications the term component video generally refers to analog YPbPr component video with sync on luma.

RGB stand for Red Green Blue, individual colors on separate cables.

Dont worry about component vs composit and everything. That will only confuse you. All you need is the Red, White, and Yellow rca cables. The "blue cable" he was talking about is for component (Red green blue) which is usually used for HD.

Right. TMI for this.

Ok, so the DVD player worked on Input 1? Can you switch the satellite and DVD so the DVD is on Input 1 and the satellite is on Input 2?

If the satellite doesn't work on Input 2, you may have a problem with the TV, but I doubt it.

Not that sticking my nose in this will help clear up his TV issue, but it might clear something up for someone. The component cabling you are talking about is almost certainly YPbPr, however many older HDTVs and HD Monitors were true RGB (or rather RGBs where the sync signal is carried on the green cable). All RGB is types are referred to as component video (hense the confusion), and all of the video types we have mentioned use RCA connectors (as does the composite cable). You can also get a RGBs in 3 wire, or with a separate sync, 5 wire component cable for RGB-HV, and a number of other RGB standards.

In any case, given the high density of inputs in modern tv's he may have plugged the his video (composite) lead into anything, including the orange digital audio connector ;)

Pookieboo!!!
Post up the make and model number of your DVD player. It might have some menu settings or you might being hooking your video into some alternate input on the DVD player.
